[Post About Wanting to See More Credit to HPL Retracted]
The game (as indicated below) is based on the works of Wolfgang Hohlbein. Hohlbein definitely does use many Lovecraftian references, but in this way the game itself only indirectly references H.P. Lovecraft's work. Therefore, post retracted.

You were playing a production copy of the game; it's been out for a long time.
The game itself is a US version of a German game, based on a series of German novels.
Expecting them to include an explicit acknowledgment of H.P. Lovecraft is perhaps a step too far. ;)
edit: I took the OP at his word, and didn't bother to check my copy before posting...of course Mayfair *does* acknowledge HPL...but given the chain of IP involved, I wouldn't have been surprised if they didn't do it at all.

It says on the back of the box:
"...inspired by the tales of H. P. Lovecraft."

I disagree and I think Lovecraft would too. He was always rather explicit in his intent of making his ideas available for others to build off of and did not ask for credit in works that were published referencing his ideas in his own lifetime.
Taking that to the present day, his works are in the public domain and although giving credit is optional, it should not be expected.

Actually this game is based on the books of Wolfgang Hohlbein (which is why his name is in big red letters on the front of the box and not the designer's, Michael Reinick)
Based on the content though Hohlbein may have borrowed generously from Lovecraft (who apparently actively encouraged this).

And, it's based on the works of Wolfgang Hohlbein:

Of course, anything in the Cthulhu Mythos owes a tremendous debt to Lovecraft, and, as mentioned, we do certainly acknowledge Lovecraft as part of the back cover text. But this game is specifically based on the works of Wolfgang Hohlbein, including characters that he created.

What really bothers me is the lack, in the English edition, of the booklet telling the basics of the story for those who haven't read the novel (that is, most of us).
