So I'm really interested in the Overlord games, even though I don't even own Memoir 44 yet... modest

I was reading through the rules, and noticed that the CinC can only discuss tactics or whatever with one FG at a time. By reading the rules, it seems that the other FGs should not even listen to the conversation between the CinC and the FG in question. How should it be done? Can the other players overhear the conversation? How do you handle these discussions during gameplay? Do you actually go to a separate room and talk, or you don't mind the others hearing what is being discussed? And finally, if you do discussions in private, doesn't it slow down the game too much?

Thanks.

Usually as the C-in-C, I just talk quietly to the selected FG at the table. I may show him some cards in my hand to show him what I'd like to set up in the future.

Wouldn't that be against the rules? Of course, nothing against it

This is subjective, but I would think that an understanding would be established to which the Lead Commander could take advice but still be the prevailing decider in his/her dispersion of cards to the Field Commanders-as one would when working with higher ranking officers. The conversation would also generally be brief, particularly as the game gained in momentum and decisions became more apparent to everyone.

My personal experience is that I don't think multiple generals slowed down the game too much - just made it more interesting!

very generally talking as in "here is your card, you need to attack, I can give you cards for the next few rounds". No specifics, a CinC may never show his cards to anyone.
