Don't start witht the cards and cartouches.
Load up the temples with pieces, and explain that each turn we place and remove pieces from the temples. Pieces removed go into the kingdom of the dead track, and when that's full it triggers a scoring round.
Each temple is assessed and points awarded. (do this with the random setup, and move each scoring piece).
That's the player's motivation sorted. Then you can explain the cartouches and cards, the method for getting the pieces into the temples.
It's common sense I know, but it took me a few times to settle on it, and makes a huge difference to teaching the game, since the order of the cards is a fairly knotty, un-intuitive affair.
