I was playing with a friend of mine and the Gag card came up. As soon as I read the card he stated that I had to lose a life point as it was in effect. The rules state that each card must be read aloud. He was then silenced both in argument and in practice for the entire round (which was interrupted by his wife calling him...he choose to lose a point and answer the phone). When I flipped the next card after Gag, I then read that card aloud as the rules state I must but he balked when I refused his instance that I lose a life point for this. His argument is that if the card's effect is only valid after the card is read, then the effect would last until the next card was read. This would insist that either the player must lose a life point or simply refuse to read the card, both of which are ridicules. Please help me convince a lawyer that his interpretation of this document is unsound and illogical. Post your responses, comments, and insults for either side.
Thank you and long live the(or death to the) Sheriff.

First off, Wild West Show is a NON-serious expansion to a game that is, itself, not that serious. So your friend needs to lighten up a little.
In my play group we announce the card, read it aloud, establish any 'allowable' talking (usually outside interupptions are allowed, within reason) and the card doesn't take effect until it is placed on the table.
When it's time for Gag to be replaced, it is automatically called off the moment the Stagecoach is played.
