It had taken me weeks... No... Months to get together enough thrifted Yahtzee Jr's and TMNT games to build my fighters.
They were all in place, ready to roll.
But they didn't. For all of that work, I couldn't get my wife to play it with me.
Until tonight. Midnight Brawl! Dishes were done, kids were asleep, time to fight.
I let her choose her warrior first. Tentacle Monster. Unexpected.
I chose. Wizard.
She took The Bear.
I nabbed the Soldier with his special non-human attack bonus!
I shuffled the cards, we rolled for our characters.
"What does the red dice mean?" she reveals both of her character weapons dice at full.
I flip the first card, Tentacle's action.
My wife rolls the dice for an attack on the wizard: head hit, 2x.
I look at my wizard, unused, remaining so, lying dead on my table.
Now my attack, the Knight... 2 shots to the legs cripples the Bear.
The Bear hits the Knight in the head for one hit point.
I reshuffle the cards. My wife asks, "Do you always shuffle? That's neat how it's dice and cards randomizing."
Knight up first, I try to disarm the bear, nothing.
The Bear and the Tentacle both hit the Knight's body for 1hp each, but with only 2hp to go and no wiggle, his armor deflects (or so I tell my wife)
Reshuffle
Knight disarms Bear again and this time succeeds. My wife rerolls her weapon for a medium die, thank God.
Bear and Tentacle continue hitting for 1hp. Bear to the body, deflected again, but Tentacle gives a head shot, leaving only 1hp left in the head.
Reahuffle.
Bear is up and takes a swipe at Knight... 1hp to the head, and my last fighter falls.
My wife gives a slight smile, "It's cute, but I don't like fighting!"
Me, I'm hooked.

I don't think I'll get to play this game properly before my son is old enough for it

Glad you had fun, and were able to get the wife in on it as well. Two player CF has always fallen flat for me though. It seems once you get behind in fighters you're pretty much done for. Now four or more with multiple fighters, that is where this game really shines IMO. If you get the chance to get a few more people to play. Do it, it's a blast.
