My wife and I decided to play a quick game and Roll Through the Ages fits the requirement. It's fast and fun.
I felt like I jumped out to an early lead with Agriculture on my first turn and she added a city. But, I was able to get a city on my second turn and was feeling pretty good; she added irrigation. I climbed up to 6 cities fairly quick and started adding in the 15 cost Developments (Quarrying and Medicine). In fact, she rolled Pestilence the turn after I added Medicine so that worked out well. She moved to 5 cities and started building the Invasion-free monument while picking up Coinage.
I had no trouble feeding my people and the goods were flowing in pretty well with my developments. I suffered Invasion, but was able to grab Architecture on the same turn with two large monuments done... the obelisk and larger 8-pointer. She started gathering plenty of goods with Caravans and the coins were especially powerful with Coinage. She took Masonry and then rolled a ton of coins and easily picked up Empire.
It was looking pretty close but I figured I was ahead because she had about 10 disasters to my 4. On my last turn, I built the smallest monument (for just the bonus point because she had it already) and the second-smallest monument and I purchased Leadership just for the 2 points. I'd finished 7 developments (how we play with two players) and we'd finished all of the monuments between the two of us so it was her last turn. She rolled three coins and four goods (skulls). She re-rolled her other two dice and added another coin which allowed her to buy Empire and that was going to make this game extremely close. I wasn't sure who had it, but figured Empire would put her over the top. It did.
She: 47 points (38 + 11 + 8 - 10)
Me: 43 points (29 + 16 + 4 - 6)
It seemed like more points than we'd ever scored before. Going to 7 developments in a three player game makes a difference and we did feel like the rolls went our way. But, I looked back at my last three player game of this and it finished 13 to 11 to 9. Eek! There were tons of disasters in that game, but it's also clear that we were making many poor choices and not lining up our developments.
Now, after reviewing Roll Through the Ages: The Late Bronze Age, I see that we have to try it. Late Bronze Age looks like it will make the game better in many ways and I look forward to seeing how it goes. If it works well, I'll share it with my parents and brother who also enjoy the original quite a bit.
