I was thinking, at least for a 3 player variant, of putting 1 mark on unselected roles after the end of a round, similar to Puerto Rico. This might motivate players to select roles that might otherwise be neglected (like Explorer), and possibly get the game moving faster. I am interested in everyones thoughts and comments on doing this. Thanks!

Another variant we played (but did not put in the official rules) was to go twice around the table before resetting the round in 3-players. In other words, everyone chooses two roles before you put them all back.

I agree that some incentive is necessary for unclaimed and underutilized roles. I would eliminate the $2 per round rule if you played this way.
