I finally played this 2-player variant from the C3i magazine and really enjoyed it. I am puzzled by two rules that seem to contradict themselves.

2.2 Political Control states:
Only Metz, Liege, and all spaces in the German and Italian language zone may change political control in this variant.

Rule 13. Movement states:
Papal and Protestant units may never move, intercept, retreat, or avoid battle to spaces outside the German and Italian language zones.

If Metz and Liege can be taken, but we can never move in, doesn't this contradict the rule? And if you can move in to those spots, what movement is legal in the French language zone?

I've never played the 2-player scenario so this is just a guess, but:

Is it possible that Liege and Metz change political control from whatever they start at to one of the non-player powers through one of the events? Like the French takes control of Metz from the Haps... or something like it?

I haven't looked at this in awhile. I remember the problem. If Papacy cannot actually take over the territory themselves, there is no auto-win possibility.

Colleen: Those spaces are useful for the Hapsburgs to send armies into Germany. So basically the Hapsburgs can seize them if they'd like as paths from the Netherlands, but the Protestants can't go out of Germany and seize them first.

There are 7 keys in Italy, so it is possible. You have to kick the Haps out before the Schmalkaldic League is played, though.
