The Golden Geek Award is given annually to the best new games of the year, as selected by you, the users. This year is our inaugural year for the Video Game world.
The "Geekies" will be given in the following categories:
For Board Games --------------- - Best Strategy Game - Best Abstract Game (New Category) - Best Thematic Game (New Category) - Best Family Game - Best Wargame - Best 2-player Game - Best Party Game - Best Children's Game - Best Card Game - Best Artwork/Presentation - Best Expansion - Best Print & Play - Most Innovative
For RPGs -------- - RPG Game of the Year - Best Artwork & Presentation - Best Supplement - Best Podcast
For Video Games --------------- - Video Game of the Year - Best Visuals/Artwork - Best Indie Game - Best Mobile/Handheld Game - Most Innovative Game
Here are the specifics:
In order to avoid voter fraud, we have adopted the following restrictions. Voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient),voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee, or users who have purchased an avatar or a geekbadge.
Anyone caught stuffing the ballot box will have their votes removed and be suspended from the site.
There will be two steps to selecting the winners.
First, there will be a nomination phase. Each eligible voter can nominate up to 10 items in each of the categories. The 10 items with the most nominations in each category will become the nominees for the final voting. You are not restricted to the list of suggested nominees.
The board game nomination page is here. The RPG nomination page is here. The video game nomination page is here.
The final voting will be resolved using a condorcet voting system - specifically the Schulze method. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method
For those who don't want to read the specifics of the system, users will rank the games in each category from 1 to 10, (with a 0 for no opinion), and, through some mathemagical computations, we will select the winner.
The nomination phase will run until 9/30 and the final voting for one more month (10/31). The winners will be announced at BoardGameGeek.CON 2011 in November.
You are welcome to campaign, discuss voting and nominations, etc, as much as you like. Let the awards begin!

BGGCON = BoardGameGeek.CON = GEEKCON, I think we've used 3 names for the convention.

You've done a great job with the interface for choosing nominees this year! It's very easy to filter the games by what I've played, and then nominate a game for multiple awards if I want to. Well done!
And we've got a very good crop of games to nominate from! Although maybe not as good as next year will be...

Thanks for holding this event, I always enjoy this.
The filtering is pretty cool as another user commented.

Scott,
When I try to select a game by name, it can never find the game. (Even games on the list - I tried Color Stix, as one example - don't show up.) As a result, I'm having difficulty nominating a game not on the list (Don Q. und die Vermessung von La Mancha, specifically).
Using Chrome, in case that matters...

Thanks - I'll check it out.

Almost the same is true here - I wanted to nominate A Few Acres of Snow and was not able to do so (using Safari on a Mac Lion) - it can neither be found nor is it on the list

Must eligible nominees have a publication date of 2011?

No, we're pretty lax on this - a lot of games came out at the end of 2010 that can qualify here.
Also, I fixed the searcher so it's working again.
A Few Acres of Snow is listed under 'F'

How do you determine what is eligible for nomination? For instance you have Eclipse on there, which doesn't come out until Essen, yet I can't find Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion to nominate in the Expansion category? I'm assuming that I've missed something obvious but I can't figure out what.

Do I need to 'submit' my votes, or is entering them enough?

The list just goes off games that have been entered into the databaes - it's by no means the only games that can be or should be nominated. It's up to the users to decide whether something is eligible.

It doesn't seem to be working like a charm for me, sadly! It says to hit the nominate button at the top, middle of the screen... I squint and open my eyes wide and... no button...

Seems sad that this award occurs several months before the end of the year, what with a bunch of new games coming out soon.
I wanted to vote for Disgaea 4 as the best video game of the year, but it's not in the list. The US version comes out 9/6 (Tuesday), but I've put over 100 hours in the Japanese import version already.
