I was trying to find if there were any other Zelda-related board games made, and came across references to the Hyrule Fantasy board game. From what I could find, it was only released in Japan, and it looks a lot more interesting than MB's Legend of Zelda board game.
Here's a photo.
The board is a grid-based hand drawn representation of the overworld in the Legend of Zelda NES game, which is pretty awesome. There are also 4 different color Link figures, character mats/sheets with spaces to track life, inventory, and triforce pieces, and a unique die showing an arrow and the number two.
Anyone know anything about this?

Looks like this would make for a neat co-op game. I'd buy just b/c it's a Legend Of Zelda item that looks good on its own (never mind how the game plays).

Well, there's one for sale on eBay, right now... only $450.
(can't get the url to work in this post, though)
From the photos on that eBay listing, one side of the die has a sword and the number 5, and another has a wand and a number 4, and another side has a bomb and a number 1.

I'm upset that it took me 24 years to find out that these board games exist, and the fact that it was only today that I was told that there are Zelda board games.
I've put my zelda fan microbadge to shame!

So, I actually have some scans of the rulebook. However, I don't know Japanese. Anyone feel like doing some translation or know someone who'd be interested in taking a crack at it?

Sure I can try... I don't speak the language though.
Worse case, I'll awe at your awesome board game.

I would be all over making a PnP version of this if only we could get scans and a Japanese to English translation...
Here's an eBay listing that shows more photos of the game: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Fantasy-Board-Ga...

Well, crap, linking to eBay isn't working...anyway, there's an auction on there that shows a LOT more pics if anyone wants to run it down (it's the BIN for $500 OBO auction with $68 shipping to the states).

Oh, I misunderstood. Hmmm, I wonder how one goes about getting that sort of thing done?

For anyone subscribed to this and still interested, I have tracked down a full scan of the game and all components, and Shawn has tracked down someone to translate them for us. The ultimate goal is to provide a complete, playable, English copy of the game in all its glory. I've submitted the game to the database so it has its own entry, and as soon as that is approved we'll probably start posting status updates there on the project's progress.

I've eyeballed that eBay listing for quite a while. This is stellar news, and I look forward to seeing how the project turns out.

I will be watching this thread with great interest.
Incidentally, when you get the copy in-hand, you should snap some pictures and submit it as a new game in the BGG database, as it's not there yet from what I can tell. (And let us know in this thread, so we can subscribe to that game!)

The game now has its own entry: The Legend of Zelda: The Hyrule Fantasy.
Also, we'll be updating people on the status of the game at this thread: Hyrule Fantasy Total Conversion Project.

I was looking at the photo of the Link pawns and that's perfect for a LOZ: Four Swords semi-retheme.
