Greetings!
I was wondering: what is the best A&A version? Original, Revised, 50th Anniversary or 1942?
Why do you suggest that one? Quality of the board, pieces etc. as well as gameplay.
A&A is quite a financial investment, so I'd just like to do some research.
Thanks guys.

Best is original Axis and Allies with the 1992(?) clarifications. I don't know why they have had such a hard time making a good sequel, but none of the sequels measure up.

I'd have to say that the best version is also the hardest to acquire: the Anniversary Edition. It's got the best of everything (nearly all the new units, Italy & China as separate powers, National Objectives), nice little boxes for each power, and great minis. The board has nice little touches that make it look like a war room map, too.
I have played all of the "core" versions of A&A except the new 1940 Global, and the 50th Anniversary edition is hands-down the best in my opinion.

I suspect that nostalgia is the main reason some people rate the original editions (MB) higher than later editions like Revised and 1942. Most "serious" / competitive players prefer the newer editions as they are better balanced and have more different units.
I second the recommendation of the Anniversary edition as the best in the series. However, as mentioned, it is very expensive on Ebay etc.
I would recommend you get the latest entry level game which is Axis & Allies 1942 (second edition). Alternatively you could probably find a cheap second hand copy of the Revised edition, which is very similar (but without cruisers).
If you want a more complicated game, you could also take a look at the 1940-games. As stand-alone games they can be played in an evening. Just beware that the combined global game will take at least 8 hours to play!

Wow! 8 hours?! Sounds like fun!
Thanks a lot for all the help and advice. And yes, the anniversary edition can be veeeery expensive! Saw one for R12,000! That is about 1,700 US dollars!
Will keep my eyes and ears open.

Anniversary for overall, Original for fun (with right rule set), Global for realism.
Just my 2 cents.
