A variant I've been thinking of making, wondering if anyone else has tried this yet. Make 6 characters per color, one for each x-x (sum 7) pair. This would mean making an additional 3 characters for some colors, and an additional 2 for others. Then let the players choose the characters they use (retaining the 3 or 4 limit depending on number of players).
One thing this would eliminate is the odd line that is formed first round. It also would shake up pathmoving.
