I'm going to be embarrassed if either I'm wrong about this or this was posted in another thread (I did check). Miskatonic's player aids seem to have a wording that is misleading at best and incorrect at worst with regard to gate limits.
For example, on the aid marked "Number of Players: 4" is the text "Open Gate Limit: 7" (exceptions for additional expansion boards follow). Of course, the correct rule as stated in the base game rule book that "The Ancient One Awakens at: 7 Open Gates." It might be pointed out that this is the limit needed to trigger a game mechanism, but this is not the case for "Outskirts Limit: 4" or "Monster Limit: 7," both of which are the maximum numbers possible without some badness being triggered. Strangely, the thumbnail of the player aid given in the Rules' Component Overview has the gates information simply called, "Open Gates;" I'm wondering if it were changed at the last minute.
I know, if you're buying Miskatonic then you're probably an experienced Arkham player, not likely either to make a gate number mistake or perhaps even to rely on the aid. Speaking only for myself, while managing Corruption cards, Blight cards, etc., I could find myself having made a gate number mistake while using the aid. Arkham vets, please tell me if I've made some mistake here and there is some reason why a gate limit is increased (without the additional expansion boards obviously). Otherwise, despite my love for all things Fantasy Flight, I thought it deserved a quick "heads up" for others like myself prone to bookkeeping mistakes that impact gameplay.

I think the subtlety is in the rules themselves. In both case there is a limit. However, with the Outskirts you don't trigger the special action until it is exceeded. Where as in the gate limit, you trigger it as soon as it is reached.

Brian, thanks for responding. I've always been glad to see your posts; they've made Arkham even more fun for me to play. Hypnos help me (!), I have to maintain that, while some might disagree about what the word "limit" means (whether "threshold" or "maximum"), having two contradicting meanings of the word used simultaneously on a player aid could be a little confusing. On the player aid from the back of the base game rulebook, it's handled clearly enough.
I really don't mean to quibble, though; I legitimately thought that either I had erred or FF had. I love the expansion; I love the game. I know real people put the Miskatonic expansion together and I am appreciative of their hard work in accomplishing what I thought would be too big a task to attempt.

I admit it could be clearer but then I am just as much to blame as I proofed them. Unfortunately, the numbers clicked and so I didn't think beyond someone not reading the limits the right way.
