Wiz-War, Kings-n-Things, Dungeonquest, Horus Heresy, Nexus-Ops, Cosmic Encounter, Talisman, Titan, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Betrayal at house on the Hill, Space Hulk.
I'm sure there are quite a few that I missed but these have all seen some major reprints or are in the process of being done. Where's the love for Aliens.
Somebody get on the horn, contact 20th century fox and what's left of Leading Edge (assuming these rules haven't become public propety now) AND GIVE US OUR REPRINT!
Does this game just not generate the buzz of the others. I can't believe this game doesn't have the fan base as say "TotAN" or "BaHotH" or even Titan. It's Aliens, this should have as big a fan base as Star Wars or Star Trek, the latter of which at least is getting new games in its univerese.
Who do I have to whine to or at? I want my $100, big chrome, fully loaded, 34 highly detailed plastic minis, huge double sided thick fold out board, (embossed of course) extra thick highly glossy character cards and my 10 sided specialty die with an aliens head for the zero.
Is that asking too much?

at $100 it would be cheaper than some other boardgame with 'marines' and aliens in tight confined space.

I suspect it will only see the light of day in a re-theme. I'm pretty sure obtaining the movie rights would be the sticking point today.

I don't know. Everybody acts like the movie rights are sooo expensive or unobtainable. Maybe it's true but activision did an Aliens Vs Predator video game and I'd be surprised if when the new Alien movie from Ridley Scott comes out, that there isn't a video game to go along with that. So if they can get the rights so can FFG or maybe Z-man. I think the hang up may be the copyright for the game design from Leading Edge or it may actually be that designers or publishers don't see a market for it.

I would agree, but what really wonders me is why can a russian company like Zvezda produce a series of boardgames based on movie rights. Like from Disney/Pixar: Pirates of the Caribbean Shrek just to name a few...
They even have a Terminator boardgame: Terminator Salvation and an Aliens v Predator boardgame:
I really don't know how they obtain the rights to produce all these games.
Why it isn't possible for an american company to deliver us a cool terminator or aliens boardgame?
jphien wrote: I think the hang up may be the copyright for the game design from Leading Edge or it may actually be that designers or publishers don't see a market for it. Maybe this is the reason, but I can hardly imagine it. The Aliens universe (and Terminator) is so cool that even a company like GW made a rip-off from it. See Space Hulk or the Necrons from 40K.

Btw: Here are some more pics from the AvP boardgame:
and the minis:
Now imagine what a company like FFG can do with this theme.

They probably don't obtain the rights. Isn't Zvezda the company that was accused of ripping off a company, on this site? (After looking: yes.)

Assuming they did get the rights, is it feasible that you can get cheaper rights for a regional release or in a 'niche' language?
More relevantly, the more mainstream companies seem more willing to pay for rights and then produce a crappy game, while companies that produce decent games possibly cant justify a possibly reasonable outlay on rights - with royalties that would cut in too heavily on sales margins (more importantly you need the permission of the actors in the movie, and there wasnt a proper picture of Ripley on the character card or pawn in the original game).
As much as I love the Aliens boardgame, I dont know that vanilla action point games are that popular generally to justify such a big investment. Although it was a great old school strategy game, for $100 I would want a few decks of cards, additional missions and some sort of resource management (in theme) and a campaign structure.

there is a new Aliens game out next Spring I think
Colonial Marine
for the record, the Aliens vs. Predator game on the 360 is amazing, freaks me out every time I played it ... the scenery and lighting is superb!
I would buy 2 at $100 if they ever made a boardgame like SpaceHulk ...

You don't have to pay for the rights to the actors images. I don't think any one would complain too much for painted images that don't really look like the actors. It's not as cool but it would cut cost.
Leading edge paid for everything that has been mentioned and they were a nobody outfit compared to most. Many boardgame companies went belly up back in the 80's early 90's because of the increase in popularity of video games. West End was one of the big ones and Avalon Hill (the king) did some major downsizing and pretty much stuck with their big name games (A&A). And even then they were acquired by hasbro. GW just dropped their boardgame line altogether. So it's no suprise that Leading Edge folded.
Lucky for us the last few years has seen a resurgence in boardgame popularity.
My point in all of this is, Leading Edge was pretty much a nobody in the industry and they somehow got the rights at the epitome of "Aliens" popularity AND had to pay for the actors images. They were also working on a Terminator game which means even more money out of their pockets.
If a little company like Leading Edge could do it, then certainly one of these "conglomerates" ( I use the term loosly) could afford it today.

Another thought. WizKids just recently did an "Alien vs. Predator" game. Which had some cool minis. I know because I bought the sets.
They may already have the rights to "Aliens". Just drop the actors images and give us our game. They gave Star Trek fans 2 games. I demand equal rights.

They had a few cards in the expansion and the advanced rules had you keep track of ammo and spend time loading your weapon, hense your resource management. They really did cover all bases. Including advanced rules like when "Apone" is killed the marines become so confused without their Sarge barking them orders that they can't move for 3 turns.
They have the "Reactor Room", "Operations and Airducts", "Ripley vs. the queen", "The Rescue of Newt", "The Hunt for the Queen" and the optional rescue of marines that were grabbed but not killed during The Reactor roon scenario. Plus the option to link them all together in a campaign. Not sure what more you would want but that's quite a few for one game.
And let's not forget the "Let's eat Burke" and the "Petty Revenge" scenarios which are hilarious.

The Space Jockey has always interested me, since in the original, the Aliens were not from that planet, the Jockey was transporting them and crashed there. So why was the Jockey trasporting all these weird creatures? Where was he going? Etc.
I'm very much looking forward to this movie
