You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

People of the Geek, it is my honor to introduce the next Geek of the Week. I wanted to pick someone who was helpful and did things for others on BGG, someone who was trying to make BGG a better place. I finally settled on a person who pretty selflessly designs microbadges for others. He manages a thread where people can request microbadges:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/49228/microbadge-reque...

He doesn't so much as design badges for himself, because he wants them, but he hangs a shingle out to take requests from non-graphically oriented Geeks (like me).

Fellow Geeks, I present to you Kevin Lee.

Kevin, I was surprised that you hadn't already been Geek of the Week!

Gaming Bio

I grew up in Houston Texas and was moved to Steubenville Ohio when I was 11 years old. I'm the middle child of 9 kids, oldest boy. Played a lot of traditional board games with my family growing up but mostly Trivial Pursuit and card games like Spades and Hearts.

Got married during my senior year of college and bought my first board game for our first Christmas together. In a search for a game I used to play as a child at my grandpa's house, Sid Sackon's Can't Stop, I registered here at boardgamegeek to utilize the marketplace.

Years later my brother-in-law taught me to play Catan over a Christmas vacation and I was hooked on Eurogames. Before I left his house I had won an eBay auction for my own copy and started a weekly Settlers match.

My best gaming buddy started to come and mentioned that there were actually "better" games than Settlers out there and that there was a website I could consult to find out more about them. I was appalled that he didn't agree that Catan was the best game in the world but eventually heeded his advise and got sucked up into this site. Since those early months in 2008 I've faithfully log my game plays and I've spent too much time on boardgamegeek discussing board games and designing microbadges. We built up our collection to over 300 titles and still meet weekly (when jobs allow) to play our favorite games which are still primarily Eurogames.

In that time both of our oldest kids have grown into joining us occasionally and I started (or rather inspired the start of) a Board Game Club at the university where I work. If I'm lucky I attend both our weekly Board Game Club and our weekly Game Night but I usually get to one or the other. I enjoy learning new games and love to teach people new games.

Kevin, here are some questions to get you started:

1. What is the favorite microbadge that you have designed?

2. What is your favorite microbadge that you did not design?

3. Do you have a particular philosophy/style/preference for how microbadges should be designed?

4. You mentioned Atlas Shrugged - why is it your favorite?

Emjoy your week!

I've seen the avatar about but don't know anything about you.

Do you design just any microbadges for anybody? Do you charge, such as in GG?

What are some of the traditional games you grew up playing? Favorite non-euros?

EDIT: (to add)
Congrats!

No way! I was sure you were a GotW already. I really have to find that thread again. shake

Anyway - good job Jim for remedying a group remission.thumbsup

CONGRATULATIONS! Kevin,
one of the more artistically inclined of our little community.

Artists always bother me a little because I suck so badly at artistic endeavors.whistle
But, being a left-brainer, they fascinate me too and I always want to know more, so:
d10-1Are you artistically talented in other ways - drawing, painting, music?
d10-2How much time do you devote to microbadge design?
d10-3How long do they take on average?
d10-4What's the longest amount of time you've spent on one microbadge?
d10-5What would you need from a requestor to design a badge?
d10-6What's your personal favorite?
d10-7Assuming I wanted you to do one for me, what would you ask of me?
d10-8How many Geeks do you think will have to look up Myers-Briggs (INTJ)?

Enjoy your week in the sun!cool

Hi there! Follow my gaming exploits on Twitter (fehrmeister)

Congratulations Kevin! You're a great choice for this honor.

Here are several questions for you:
- What's the best thing about living in Ohio?
- What are the top 3 games you haven't yet played that you would like to try if given the chance?
- I see that you haven't yet rated any game as a 10. Do you think that you will one day find a game that you would rate that high? What would it take for a game to get that rating from you?
- I think it's awesome that you have twins. I'm a father of twin boys myself (3rd and 4th in birth order, now 11), and those first couple of years after they were born were definitely the most difficult in our journey of raising kids. How have you been making out so far? Do you ever get nights where you and your wife can sleep without waking up for anyone?
- Are you a baseball fan at all? Are you partial to the Reds or Indians?

Hope you have a great week Kevin!

1. That's like asking what my favorite game is. There is always a few rotating around the top of the list. Right now, these are up there...mb mb mb

2. This one always makes me laugh. It was declined at first but made it's way into the list. I love it...mb

3. The best microbadges are drawn by hand. I only have a few like that. My favorite are hand drawn and quirky funny. Something not everyone will find humorous.

4. Epic case for capitalism over stateism. Something I feel strongly about and enjoyed going along for the ride, all 900+ pages of it.

I generally take requests but setup the geeklist mentioned to leave it open for anyone to respond to them. I always appreciate GG as a tip but it's not required.

I played Trivia Pursuit and cards mostly with the family. Monopoly and Risk with friends and brothers. I actually played a bunch of Risk on the computers in high school. Chess, Othello, Babylon. Primarily cards though.

Favorite non-euro: I guess that would be Memoir '44 It's actually my son's copy that I bought for him for his 8th birthday. We've played quite a bit.

Tigris & Euphrates was the 2nd game to blow my mind. Multiple ways to earn victory cubes, balance, and of course the Knizia scoring of the least of the group is your score.

I loved discovering that one to.

- Will you congratulate you're RPGG and VGG counterpart?

Have fun this week and may you play many games.

I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.

Hi Kevin

I assumed you'd been GW as well.
Congratulations!!!

Most geeks have no idea of your input and commitment to the geek from Microbadges. I've seen it and think it's time for you to take a bow.

Have a great week.

My three questions

1 What is the best Microbadge (or microbadges) you've seen?
2 When you're not looking at the microbadge threads where do you look around on BGG/VGG/RRPG?
3 Will you try and find the next geek of the week from another country and from an area that hasn't had a GW for a while (Mb's have been woefully underrepresented) ?
