When the prince gains a follower with a wealth code, who gets the wealth? Does the prince get it (to share as he likes), or does the follower keep it as his personal property until his death?
"r225 Acquiring Treasure -- Whenever you kill all characters encountered, your party may take their wealth. [...]
Distributing Acquisitions: you decide which characters receive what part of the treasure. You may decide to give your followers nothing, and retain all the wealth for yourself.
If you do give any money or a possession to a follower, it becomes his personal property. You can never take it back unless the character dies. [...]
Historical Note: this system for holding wealth is based on ancient Celtic and Germanic social customs, where the chief or leader owned all property, including all spoils from raids or wars. His band of followers was provided for, and was from time to time given individual items as gifts for especially valuable services."

I have always played it as any wealth the follower has is his personal property. This fits in with the principle/statement in the "Distributing Acquisitions" section.
As an add-on rule, a roll against the Princes' Wits & Wiles could be made to see if the follower will use or loan out his gold to bail out the party when there is a need.

The Wealth Code is only used to determine how much gold you will get on average if you fight the character encountered. I believe the proper way to play the game is that the Wealth Code of the follower is of no consequence, unless that follow turns on you at a later point in the game. This might occur if they joined as a looter and you didn't give them a fair share of the loot from an encounter. If you fight them in this way and kill them, use their wealth code to determine how much Gold you acquire (in addition to any gold/possessions they were given, as in the example below).
If you give a follower something (Gold, Special Item), it is theirs until they die (as the rules clearly state). If they die in battle (or some other encounter), then I see nothing wrong with you collecting your fallen friends items and redistributing them as you see fit.
