Do all pillaging units have to move into the same area after having pillaged? The rules seem not to postulate that. What if there is no area where all units could legally move, i. g. a ship and a land unit and the ship can't carry the land unit. Is it allowed to voluntarily reduce the land unit to do so?

The rules do not specify that they must all withdraw to the same adjacent area.
You can always voluntarily reduce cv in order to load a land unit on a fleet.

Thanks!
Thank you also for the great game! Why didn't Columbia want to produce it?

Hi, while it may not have been the designer's intent, the rules DO specify that the entire besieging group must move to an (an = one) adjacent area. Joel Toppen clarified this in an earlier question on BGG. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/503241/pillaging-withdra...
If this rules wording is incorrect, it should be added to the errata/FAQs.
From the earlier thread
Quote: 1. Do pillaging blocks have to withdraw together to the same adjacent region, or may they disperse?
5.5 second paragraph: "Pillaging costs 1 Action. The entire besieging Group Withdraws (moves) into an adjacent area containing no enemy blocks."

Re: Columbia
At a late point in development, Columbia demanded several simplifications that were unacceptable to me. I preferred to keep the game intact and seek another publisher.

I agree that the official wording is somewhat unclear on this point but implies that all Pillagers must withdraw into the same adjacent area.
IMO this rule could go either way. I agree with Joel's interpretation in the sense that Pillagers should be somewhat restricted in their withdrawal movement, as they have spent the bulk of the season devastating the province. Allowing them to disperse in an advantageous way (even just one area) allows "offensive" movement when Pillaging. This may be excessive when added to the +1 Prestige received.
However, one difficulty that occurs to me is: what happens if all members of the Pillaging Group CANNOT legally Withdraw to the same location?
This could occur, for example, if seaborne beseigers are later joined by a land Group, and adjacent coastal areas are enemy occupied. In this case there are not enough ships to carry all besiegers to sea, yet the fleets cannot Withdraw inland.
While I agree with Joel's interpretation philosophically, I do not know if we want to add this quandary to the mix. So I would rule that "ALL MEMBERS of the besieging Group must Withdraw into an adjacent area that currently contains no enemy units." This does allow a degree of offensive movement while Pillaging.
Open to discussion, but at this point that seems like the better solution to me.

Just as a thought
Could a solution be that pillagers do not HAVE to withdraw, but if they do not then the besiegers must suffer attrition as well as the besieged? Must pillagers withdraw for some other reason of game mechanics?
Supposing there are no Vacant adjacent locations, can the pillage take place?
