Mr. Jack the first two plays
After playing 5 games online, winning 3, (One Successful Inspector accusation for me, two failed accusations by the other guy, and two losses) I decided my wife might like the game, so I go ahead and acquire it.
My daughter and I were home alone tonight, so she agrees to play me. While learning the game she shows some great insights by the great questions she asks. I think she will actually be pretty good at this after a few plays. I played Mr. Jack, and could have won in Round 8, but I messed up and moved a light post right next to him in Round 7. So we called for witnesses, and I realize he was standing right next to a viable exit, he was going to be activated next round and I had first pick, but he was witnessed, so I couldn’t run for it. It was Jeremy Bert, so he ducked through a manhole, and closed it after himself, and none of the others could reach him that round. But it was a hollow win, knowing how badly I’d messed up a perfect escape.
The second game was with my wife, and I again played as Mr. Jack. This time I had Gull. She managed to scoop up Holmes 3 times out of 4, but it took her until about turn 5 or so to really grasp what she was trying to do. It had something to do with my choice of words. I was saying something like, "You want to make sure some of the suspects are in a different state: witnessed vs. unwitnessed." I was working so hard to make sure she understood what I meant by "State" that I left that different dangling. Somewhere about turn 5, she ewxclaims, "Oh! Different from each other! Not different from how they started!" And she got it then. But because she had been taking the wrong tack for most of the game, I still had 4 viable suspects. But, she held 3 alibi cards, so I was a little nervous. And in turn 7 she activates Miss Stealthy, parkours across the board and accuses Mr. Gull, winning the game. It was an "educated guess" she said. She held the alibi for only 1 of the 4 possible suspects. So it was a 1-in-3 shot, but she got it.
I loved that her assessment was that it’s a "cute" game.

Although of course one feels silly for making a blunder like that (intending to escape and forgetting you'll be visible), I wouldn't call your subsequent victory hollow. Being able to keep an identified Jack from being physically caught is often a feat in itself, and a legitimate victory!
