It is like a free gold every turn. Heck, I won a game without any action cards, just going Big Money + Hoard.
Is it that good or am I just that lucky with it?

It's fine. Good early, has some combos, it's not crazy though.

It is certainly a good card. That's why it costs $6. I usually go for it when it's out. However, it's not the fastest winning strategy in a lot of setups.

It's certainly good and one I'll frequently pick up a copy of, but as others have alluded to it's sometimes too slow. Without extra buys, consider that in your first pass through the deck it's just a silver. In your second pass through it's a silver and a gold. It's often not until the third pass through your deck that a hoard is actually better than a gold.
Hoard is also much better in the presence of multiple buys and/or Victory-something hybrids.

One of the key things to know is when to switch from buying Hoards with $6-7 to buying Gold (or Duchies).
When you buy a Hoard, you have to go through one reshuffle to be able to use it to gain Gold. You have to go through one more reshuffle to be able to use that gained Gold. In the mid-to-late game, you might not have two more reshuffles before the match is over to even be able to benefit from the Gold, so it might have been preferable to get earlier instead of the Hoard.
If you won't even get one last reshuffle, you probably want to go Duchy instead of either Hoard or Gold.
Many times, I've seen lower level players go for Hoards when there are only a couple Provinces left in the supply.

I love to buy Great Halls for $3-5 with Hoards in play. Get 1 VP, a cycle-able card, and a $6 Gold. Even better with multiple Hoards in my hand.

When I go for Hoard, I rarely get just one. It becomes exponentially better the more you have in your hand. I might get just one if I can get it early and there aren't any great deck-thinning cards out.

Let f(H) be the number of Golds you gain when you gain a victory card with H Hoards in play:
f(0) = 0; f(1) = 1; f(2) = 2; f(3) = 3; f(4) = 4; f(5) = 5;
Looks like the rate at which it gets better doesn't vary proportionally with the number of Hoards you have.

You're not taking into account the ratio of Gold to victory cards gained with each number of Hoards out. Perhaps "exponential" was not the best word to use, but what I meant was that the more Hoards you have out, the less the buying of a victory card impacts your buying power. More Hoards leads to better future buying power than fewer Hoards for a better long term strategy.

Yeah, as it happened I and my wife were going for hoards like they were candy, and buying victory cards (even estates) whenever we had a hoard in hand, just to get the gold. It was . . . interesting.
I tried a counting house strategy vs. her hoard-loving ways in another game with the same cards out. I did ok, but the hoard strategy did a little better than the counting house + pawns + mining village + crapload of copper strategy. Maybe I got the ratios wrong . . .
