I own the first AH edition of this game. The number of cities determines both taxation and movement order, as well as drawing trade cards.
Wouldn't a numbered track with numbers of cities be nice? I improvised one in my last game with some spare markers, the turn order cards and the blank replacement cards.

Since it also determines how many trade cards you get, players always know how many cities they have, anyway.

Actually, it is population that determines move order, not number of cities.

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.
Ooh yes, now a little to the left - my nose is itchy. No, no the other left! Now what colour is 12 supporter badge going to be I wonder?
-
Does your track have spaces for Barbarians etc.?

Yes it could be useful, but I have never had an issue with it, you only have to count up to nine.

Keep your spare city markers in front of you. Count how many you have. Nine minus that number is the number of cities you have.

I suppose it's more needful for me due to vision issues.

Knowing how many cities you personally have is not the major part. Seeing how many each players have and therefore order and number of cards drawn etc is.

I am pretty sure there are calamity cards in the original Civilization that cause your empire to split (and turn the counters over from memory). Just sayin' their could be more than the player civilizations on the board on occasions.
There's an up and coming market for large print games

In the straight original game, there can't be.

Since pieces in stock, including boats and cities, are public knowledge, it just takes a simple glance at that player's play mat.
It's not that difficult to count to nine 6-7 times over.

Except with my vision for one, I can't rally see this.
