Why not?
Some more characters - nothing changed since 1st edition.
Equipment and gold - this is separate element of game.

I mean different card backs or changes in the graphic design that will make the new cards stand out.

I've already answered.
You have new characters. There is nothing changed with characters from the beginning.
And equipment is a separate deck, so there is no conflict.
