Did they start substituting the barbarian with a pirate? Although it would be a $$-saving measure, it'd also be lame. OTOH, I need to double check what my Mayfair 3rd edition came with.
Then again, some of the foreign editions came with plastic bits instead of wooden.

IIRC, 3e Seafarers came with a black ship (no different from a player's ship, but in black) for the pirate, and a larger ship for the barbarian ship in 3e C&K. However, people weren't pleased with this arrangement, as it made the pirate seem non-threatening. IIRC, as a stopgap measure, the barbarian ship replaced the black ship in some print runs of Seafarers in Germany, before a second large ship was commissioned for C&K; this is now seen with 4e Seafarers/C&K.
