We never liked the start on the planet thing. Gives the first player way too much advantage. An alternative starting scenario would be to start the ships in orbit around a planet.....

And you find this works out better?

We feel it does. Because each player has to move and then load a good, by the end of the first turn both players are on a planet with two goods loaded. It gives the second player a bit more choice/ability to get to a good cargo load on the first turn. Also, both players have to burn up a turn moving to the planet. In the original rules the first player takes the best cargo and jets off, usually leaving the second player with a worse choice. Unless the second player has a passenger in hand that is a big advantage.

Yes, this variant seems to be quite meaningful - I'll try it on our next play.

I've played a few times now, and we just played this way from the beginning because it made a lot of sense.

I haven't played a ton, but this never felt like a problem to me. That's why the second player gets to choose the starting planet, so he can pick one that has a strong second choice. And as you said, sometimes that second choice might be the better one, depending on his hand.

Hi,

in most designs it is the objective to provide equal opportunities for both players - especially at the start.

My main objective in PR was: Create as many opportunities as possible to devise "devilish plans" (that might or might not get foiled by the opponent).

This is the reason that the I used the original rules.

The second player chooses the planet, but he does it not only based on the goods present at each planet, but also by taking into consideration, what cards he holds in his hand.

It might well be a good decision to choose a planet having a fat load ready for transport - if you have the right cards in hand to either send you opponent to a remote spot after he loaded up, or to switch loads with him.

This is a dangereous path to take ... but that's it all about in my game. Hope the best and GO FOR IT laugh

This comment is not meant to discourage changing the rules! I just want to clarify why I did not choose the same design path as most others.

If you have fun playing my game by your rules - I am more than happy

Best Regards
Heinrich
