"Standard" means without the four Special cards (Shadowfax, etc.)?

I felt that without the special cards, dark has a slight advantage. With the special cards, light has a slight advantage.

Definitely I think the light cards are better than the dark. "Move twice" lets Frodo swoosh by scary situations. "Bring gandalf back to life" pretty much forces dark to tie up a unit in fangorn. Dark's cards aren't nearly as helpful to them.

Didn't answer the poll, it's not clear whether they mean with or without the cards.

Agreed.
Overall, the balance is very good... the special cards tilt it in one way or another (if they are used or not).

After playing the game several hundred times it's pretty clear to me that

if we are speaking of the base game only - i couldn't disagree more.

there is a huge tilt to the dark side - say about 4-1 - if played by an experience player... now i don't have much experience with the special cards, but likely would agree that they give light the slight edge.

I have no experience with the 'new' expansion characters.

If you find the game so unbalanced without the cards, then why would you play hundreds of games without adding them in? They are in the base game.

just because it's unbalanced doesn't mean it isn't fun or challenging and the 10 minute play time fit my needs at the time...
