Just played our first "dry run" of the original game. It's the decennial version with all the expansions. I have yet to read the expansion rules. Noob question, regarding portugal on the map, how is it scored playing the original game? Thanks.

Portugal is not used in the game. Is there just for "geographic reasons".

Portugal is used in the expansions. Not in the base game. it was printed on the board for the decennial edition. Ignore it when playing without expansions

And, specifically, Portugal is not used in the only expansion (that I think is) worth playing: King and Intrigue. Portugal is only used in the Grandissimo expansion that I think is the most broken (Queen and Jester) and worthless.
Though I will say the Grand Inquisitor pawn makes a nice substitute for the black turn order cube/marker.
