Has anyone had a problem with the piece colours in the new version?
As I have partial colour blindness, the blue & purple, and the red? brown? tan? orange? pieces look rather similar (I'm looking at the publicity shots here).
They certainly look less well contrasted than the original, and if so this might put me off buying the new edition (I had a similar problem with History of the World, where the two "green" sets were so similar I had to paint one black; I really don't want to have to paint Ikusa figs).

I haven't had any problems yet but I always play when I have PLENTY of light (I'm not color blind) because in low light it's a little difficult for me to easily distinguish some of the colors.

The Ikusa pieces definitely have less contrast than the figures in either the Shogun or Samurai Swords editions. The publicity photos are an accurate depiction of the colors, and some of them are very close to each other.
Hopefully that isn't the cause of you not purchasing this great game, but I do doubt that they paid much attention to color blindness given the similarity of the colors. It is sometimes a little difficult for me to quickly distinguish between them, and I have pretty good sight.

The statement below is false.
The statement above is correct.

They are indeed fairly similar, even for non-colorblind folks. Particularly having two shades of brown (one slightly orange, one darker) is rather silly.
That said, when playing with good light and non-colorblind folks, we didn't run into problems.

Mnnn, looks like I'd be better off looking for an old version.
Had the same problem with the original MB Axis and Allies (UK "Tan" & Japanese "Yellow" were too similar, and apparently the newest version is worse with Russian red-brown and Italian brown).
Surely it should be basic red, yellow, green and blue, with purple for a 5th player, black for 6th and white for 7th (the basic colours of heraldry); and grey for neutral pieces. If people want "realistic" colours they'll be more willing to paint the pieces.
After all these years waiting to get this game they make ONE change, and its the one thing that is going to stop me buying it.

You can buy the new version and then spray paint one of the armies that looks too similar to you a different color, one that you can differentiate easily.
