"Loopin' Louie" - A Kids game... I think not!

Okay so as an Avid gamer and now a somewhat obsessed Board Game Geek visitor, I thought it was time to write a few reviews.

I have been a gamer my whole life, and recently have really jumped back into the hobby with a few friends. I kept hearing about, and seeing this kids game "Loopin' Louie". It reminded me of games like "Hungry Hungry Hippos", and all those types of kids games that have some mechanic al part that takes batteries, you have to put together, and eventually breaks after a few plays. So like many of you, I just overlooked it.

Anyway a few months back, I was buying games like I do every week it seems, and I asked a well known Gamer about "Loopin' Louie" - This is what he said:

"Well I can't really explain it... It basically has this mechanical plane that fly's around and tries to knock Chicken tokens off your wall, and everyone has this little lever that you use to knock the plane (Louie) away, and at the same time you are trying to direct the plane to knock off other players tokens. Again, I can't really explain it, but we have adult gaming parties, and I put "Loopin' Louie" out on the table and the adults play it for hours!"

So with that I was sold. The game arrived at my house and sat on the shelf for a few weeks, I was still uncertain. Then one Saturday I pulled it down and took the time to set it up and place all of the stickers that come with the game. After searching the house for a "mini" screwdriver for the battery compartment I placed the two required AA-batteries in the unit and "Loopin' Louie" was ready to go. Finally, I had to convince my not so interested wife and two of my sons (12 and 15 years old) to play the game.
My 15 year old said "Really Dad, a kid’s game, are you kidding me". I then of course, rattled off some BGG statistics, stating the "number 1 kid’s game rank" and subsequently hammed up the rarity of this precious item from Germany.
After a little debate it began... a three hour odyssey of gaming joy. We could not stop playing it was competitive, annoying, fun, and kept us laughing the whole time... well except when we were losing our chickens!

I am not sure why this game is so fun, and I am not sure why it is played as often as it is, (with a few drinks it gets even better). But the funny thing is that as you play you actually begin to find certain techniques and control, of what at first, seems so random and luck based. I can now see why they have tournaments, and that people believe this game requires skill. It is amazing how competitive everyone gets, but that is where the real fun kicks in.
Here is a brief synopsis of how we play: We play rounds until one of the four players has won 3 rounds. Each round consists of as many games as it takes until one of the four players reaches 3 wins. So depending on the player’s skill level it can go fast or take some time.
It takes a certain type of friend or adult to leave the Dart or Crokinole boards to play it, but once they do, they are hooked.
I am currently House champion, and am continually pushed by my boys for the title. Is it important to be the "Loopin' Louie King" well maybe not in the real world, but at our House... Heck Yes it is!

I think I'm the one guy on BGG that thinks that game is about as fun as cleaning a toilet. It was amusing for a couple of games but then I was happy to never play it again.

My kids get so competitive over trying to win at this game that there is usually a melt down by the end of the night.

My 6yo daughter is the current reigning champion.

I could see Loopin' Louie easily turning into an adult drinking game... Just watch on YouTube the Germans (I think they're Germans) playing this while camping.

Haha. No, I never warmed up to that. It's better then cleaning up after a great dane though. I had quite a few of those in my life. Those things poop big.
