Hi there,
I'm just starting on Rummikub and looking online I found that the rules for the joker provided with my game (made by Grow in Brazil) are different than most that I found online.

What I want to know is what rules are the brazilian rules based on? Below I translated the rules the best I could so you can read it, the underlined text is the biggest difference that I found.
Quote:
There are two jokers in the game that can replace any tile in a meld, independentely of color or number.
The joker can be used in the opening melds that player makes, assuming the value of the tile it is replacing.
On his turn, any player can take a joker that is in a meld on the table. In the case of a group with three tiles, the joker can be replaced by a tile of any missing color.
A joker removed from a meld must be used in the same turn. To this, the player can use tiles from his rack, from other melds on the table or yet simply fit it in one of the melds on the table. It is not allowed to take the joker back to the rack.
The player can add tiles, remove tiles, or split melds that have a joker everytime he needs it.
If, by the end of the game, the player has a joker on his rack, he will suffer a 30 points penalty.

Admittedly, it's been a few years since I played Rummikub (so I haven't looked at the rules in a long time,) but we played at least once a week while I was in college.

The joker rules that you've posted are exactly how we played.... if you rearrange melds out on the table and get a joker, you must find someplace else to use it... as it says either by rearranging more melds, or using it with tiles from your rack. You can't ignore it or put it back onto your rack.

I've played with several different Rummikub sets in the USA and in all cases the Joker rule is different from your Brazilian rules. Here, a Joker already on the table must be played in a meld containing at least 2 tiles from the player's hand. Unfortunately, I have no idea about the origin of the Brazilian rules.

zhouloyi,
It seems that as the years have gone by, the joker rules have become more and more "liberal" in nature. The joker used to be a "special" tile, but with many of today's rules, the joker has been "cheapened."
Many of today's rules just make the joker easier to replace, and eaiser to re-use. I agree with some of these changes, but not all of them. Here are some of the variations I have noticed, between the more traditional/conservative rules versus the newer/liberal rules :

1. A set containing a joker is "locked" until the joker is FIRST removed (you can add tiles, but cannot remove tiles or split a set) --versus--
As you put it, "the player can add tiles, remove tiles, or split melds that have a joker..."

2. When replacing the joker, the tile must come from your rack only --versus--
When replacing the joker, the tile may come from your rack or from a tile on the table.

3. The replaced joker must be used to create a NEW set, using two tiles from your rack (only), --versus--
The replaced joker can be used to create a new set or can be added to an existing set on the table. To do this, you may use any combination of tiles from your rack and/or from tiles on the table.

4. If the joker is in a "group" of three, you must replace the joker with both tiles that represent the missing colors, --versus--
If the joker is in a "group" of three, you may replace the joker with either of the missing colors.

5. You may use only one joker in a single set, --versus--
You may use two jokers in a single set.
