Kaine stands near Kith as he tends to the body. Kaine is on guard and vigilant, keeping his eyes on the creatures that seem to surround the group.

He keeps clearing his throat as it seems not only is his voice raspy, but now there is an itch that cannot be satisfied.

Even as he continues to unwillingly hum the tune of the forest, it is interrupted by the sometimes slight and sometimes forceful "khhhuuuuuuu hmmmmmm hmmmmmmm" *cough*, "heerrrrr hmmm hmmmmmm" of his throat clearing.

As his comrades attend to the woman, Rothar climbs the tree near the bend in the road (F11) to get as good a view as possible of the surrounding woods. If critters start acting strangely, he intends to be the first to know.

Ta'el is wary of the woman, despite her apparent need of aid. Last woman in sub-par health coughed eels everywhere...

She'll stand just east (F13) of the clearing and also take up watch. From her position, she'd be able to see along a good stretch of trail and keep an eye on what's happening with the woman.

As Kith calls out his warning, Oskar is concerned that all might not be as it appears. Trying to shake the infectious song from his head, he speaks the words of a spell and attempts to divine if there's more going on here than meets the eye...

Detect magic in the direction of the woman (i.e. due east).

I didn't read Nate's reply as actually tending to the body, but everyone else did and he thumbed them - so I'll fast forward to that point. I've also moved Gareth up so he can actually see the body, but he and Oskar can be closer if they would like. I'm basically giving everyone two rounds of actions as Kith moves forward and kneels at the body.

Oskar casts detect magic as the others move forward. He scans the body and its environs but detects no magical auras.

Rothar begins to climb a tree, and Ta'el peers carefully down the path.

Kith moves toward the body, Kaine at his side. The eyes follow the pair as they close but do not move. It is immediately apparent that the woman is dead - likely from the multitude of small bites and a few much larger gouges. As the paladin kneels at her feet, the trees erupt with motion - a swarm of squirrels, possums, and weasels chatters angrily and flows down the trees. Meanwhile, to the east a particularly large weasel hisses angrily!

Please roll for initiative in this post! Rothar and the animals are all in the trees, 10 feet off the ground.

The large squirrel token represents a swarm of rodentish creatures; the weasel is a Dire Weasel.

And Happy Thanksgiving to all! (Even Paz - when I lived in England I was served three Thanksgiving dinners that week...heaven!)

Yes, my original post did not have the intent of Kith going and tending the body. However, as everyone seemed to want Kith to do that, I figured that's okay.

Sorry I haven't been responsive. I'd like Gareth to approach cautiously a few steps behind Kith. The grizzly scene is enough to turn even his stomach. He'll stop around F8 as combat breaks out, if that's ok.

This might change, considering how far down the batting order Ta'el is sitting, but the plan is:

Ta'el reaches back and pulls an alchemist's fire from its loose tie on her pack (move action) and throws it at the mammalian swarm (B10, or therabouts, adjusted to avoid friendlies as needed)

Spoiler (mouseover to reveal):
Thrown, @ -2 for range 1d20-2 = (3) - 2 = 1
Awesome. It misses in direction: 1d8 = (3) = 3 (southwest -> 2 spaces for range... D8?)

This post superseded by one below.

Spoiler (mouseover to reveal):
As Kith examines the body, Oskar moves forward cautiously at the back of the group. He doesn't really want to get too close to the corpse, but is keen not to get isolated in this perilous place.
Move to E7.

When the animals erupt from the trees, Oskar almost reflexively creates an illusion of noise, in an attempt to scare the creatures off.
Ghost sound to make a bang or crack noise, as loud as four people shouting, coming from approx. A7.

Oskar flushes when he realises what he's done, and calls out to the others: "Don't worry, that noise was me again; just seeing if I can scare these damned vermin off!"

Here's the initiative order:

Swarm
Kaine
Oskar
Kith
Rothar
Weasel
Ta'el
Gareth

To keep things moving smoothly, I'll basically let you guys go in groups between the enemies; that way you can react to the updated tactical situation. I'll assume that you coordinate intelligently so as not to get in the way of each other, at least when possible.

The chattering swarm of rodents screams down the tree and toward Kith and Kaine, flowing over the woman's body, biting and scratching her and the holy men. The chattering is making a great deal of noise indeed.

Kaine and Kith each take swarm damage 2d4 = (3 + 1) = 4 hp damage. Also, please make a DC 14 Fortitude check - failure means you are nauseated for one round (unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention; the only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn).

Updated map: note that any square with a bush or tree counts as difficult terrain. Also, Kaine and Kith are under the squirrel swarm!

Kaine, Oskar, Kith, and Rothar may go! (Oskar may change his action if desired.)

By Volund's bellows! The sudden ferocity of the critters as they swarm over him, biting the bits of exposed flesh, catches Kith off guard. He'd never met wildlife like this, before.

Luckily, thanks to Volund's blessing; Kith finds himself still in good health; able to ward off any diseases their bites might have contained. Slipping a step backwards; Kith swings his axe mightily towards the mass of rodents.

Oh man, I thought we'd at least get an AC check against the swarm attack. Guess that'll teach me to be a bit more cautious in the future!
DC 14 Fortitude Check 1d20+3 = (19) + 3 = 22

Shift to E9 and attack.
Dwarven Waraxe Attack 1d20+2 = (4) + 2 = 6
Dwarven Waraxe Damage (If Hits) 1d10+1 = (2) + 1 = 3

Well, crap! With those kind of rolls, this is going to take awhile.

Fort Check:Kaine FORT roll 1d20+4 = (6) + 4 = 10 CRAP!!

Kaine stumbles backward and almost falls to his knees. He is coughing and retching uncontrollably for a few seconds.

Failed that roll, so I am nauseated. My move is to go back to square E16.

Rothar realizes there isn't much he can do to disperse the swarm of vermin below him, but wonders if perhaps the presence of a potential predator (the dire weasel) might make them scatter. Nature knowledge 1d20+5 = (20) + 5 = 25

If he thinks provoking the dire weasel to charge will make the vermin scatter, Rothar will sling a rock at it to grab its attention. Otherwise he will sling it at the largest section of the swarm that isn't likely to hit a companion.

Halfling Sling Staff +6 (1d6+2, x3) (range 80ft) 1d20+6 = (9) + 6 = 15
Damage 1d6+2 = (5) + 2 = 7

Rothar quickly realizes that the swarm itself is far from natural - these animals are all generally solitary, or at least in very small family groups. The larger weasel appears, if anything to be goading them on - they seem to feel no fear from it.

I'll assume then that you launch at the swarm, after your allies step aside so that there's no penalty.

On seeing the swarm of animals erupt from the tree, Oskar decides he doesn't want to get anywhere near it, but is keen to get in a position to do something. He crashes through the bushes in an attempt to get round the other side of the swarm.

Double move to B8 (or A9 if that's possible).

Kith steps back (since E9 is difficult terrain, you can't five-foot step there, so I put him at F9) and tries to smash the swarm, but only succeeds in brushing them off his arms.

Kaine retreats past the dire weasel, which hisses angrily at him.

Oskar skirts around the trees (getting to B8 by my count).

Rothar calls out and launches a stone at the weasel - apparently catching it off guard and hitting it squarely on the chest. It hisses in pain.

The weasel immediately leaps from its perch and launches itself at Kith past the swarm.

Weasel Acrobatics 1d20+6 = (9) + 6 = 15

Weasel atk 1d20+6 = (6) + 6 = 12

Kith's stout armor deflects the creature's vicious bite!

Gareth and Ta'el may go next!

Heeding Rothar's words, Gareth attempts to bring his quarterstaff down on the large weasel harrying Kith. Then he takes a step behind the heavily armored man.

Quarterstaff Attack 1d20+1 = (10) + 1 = 11
Quarterstaff Damage 1d6+1 = (1) + 1 = 2

Then a 5' step to G9.

Gareth swings wide at the weasel and steps back, while Ta'el steps forward and crushes several of the scurrying animals below her fists.

Ta'el realizes that weapons only inflict half damage on the little critters!

The swarm slides forward to cover the monk and begins to clamber up Rothar's tree as well!

Ta'el takes swarm dmg 2d4 = (1 + 3) = 4 and must make a DC 14 Fort save or be nauseated.

Kaine is no longer nauseated.

Kaine, Oskar, Kith, and Rothar may go!

With a bellow to envy the ringing of Volund's forge; Kith swings his axe towards the small, villainous weasel. Back, spawn of the forest! Back to the hell from which you came!

Waraxe Attack 1d20+2 = (20) + 2 = 22
Waraxe Damage 1d10+1 = (1) + 1 = 2
Based on Rothar's post below....Crit Confirm 1d20+2 = (5) + 2 = 7

Um...that's a Crit. Or possible crit. Not quite sure how Crits work in Pathfinder.

Oh yeah, I sure hope its' something good, because that's lousy damage on my part. Sheesh.

Oskar continues to stumble through the undergrowth, before coming to a gap in the bushes. Concerned by the sight of his new-found comrades being attacked by the creatures, he does his best to distract the beasts. He wiggles his fingers and speaks a few arcane words, before suddenly spreading his hand wide, chaotic colours erupting towards the animals.

Move to B10, then colour spray (DC 15) affecting C10, D9-11, E9-11 (i.e. the swarm and the weasel, but hopefully no allies)

After the color spray dissipates

Rothar mutters a curse at the enchanted critters climbing the tree and then turns a furious glare toward the weasel. With a feral howl Rothar drops his sling staff, unsheathes his Terbutje, and makes a charging leap out of the canopy toward the evil weasel (E10)!

Acrobatics (leaping down 10ft) 1d20+10 = (3) + 10 = 13
