In my second play I was the AGT, and I rushed the aft machine room with four adults and one baby in hopes of killing the robot and the crew there. Although we manage to defeat the robot and one crew member, the crew discovered the fire extinguisher did 5 dice to stun, and my AGT group ended up trapped in the room, stunned each turn, bashed with pool sticks which shrunk them, and shot with a 3-dice to kill stun gun and melee-ed until they were all dead.
Probably not a good idea to rush the robot like that, I see, but is there really anything the AGT can do if they find themselves in a room with an area effect stun effect? We played that the fire extinguisher could be used multiple times.

Bring in outside forces to kill whoever's got the area effect weapon?
You definitely want to spread your forces out and keep some "breeders" away from the main crew and make them come to you.
Sometimes, though, the crew player gets a lucky weapon draw early on and it's an uphill battle for green.

Think of the robot as a mobile fortress for the crew and act accordingly.

Try not to put all your eggs in one basket.. as it were

When I play the AGTs, I try to have a wide foot print on the map, instead of clumping up. This makes it harder to be a target for things like AoE stun effects.
Also, just sounds like you had some bad luck on top of it all.

We actually played that players could use only one fire extinguisher in the same area. But it appears this is an incorrect interpretation and only the gas grenade is limited to one effect in the same area. One adult actually survived the stun roll and chose to eat a crew member rather than flee. Another mistake.

It is kinda nice to get rid of the robot right off, though. It was definitely a risky move for the crew to use the extinguisher on 5 units at once. My friend, as the AGT, did the same exact thing to me in our second game. I used the fire extinguisher, and... no effect. Later I try some other area effect weapon on 3 or 4 AGT and... 1 die fragments. Argh!
Obviously, there's some luck involved in this fun game. :)

Luck, but also knowing what tactics to adapt once you know whats doing what to who.
No area effect weapons that are viable? Then focus what you have. Something in the mix is going to be effective. Its just living long enough to find and use.
For the crew, they want to test area effect weapons on lone monsters where possible. Whereas the monsters may well want to try and get a cluster together and hope the crew botches the effect draw.
Lots of little things that make the game so enduring.
