Let's say that earlier in the game you made a Elixir of Fire formula using the required basic elements Firelight and Waves of Ether pictured below.
Now let's this particular Firelight card also happens to be the same card for the Talisman of Secret Knowledge formula, as is the case in this instance.
My question is: May you play Decomposition on your Elixir of Fire to replace it with the Talisman of Secret Knowledge?
Part of me says that the answer has to be "No", because it's terribly anti-thematic to allow it - the Elixir of Fire is made up of two basic elements, so decomposing it can't possibly give you a Talisman. That would make no sense at all thematically, because the Talisman wasn't an ingredient in the original Elixir of Fire in the first place.
If I'm right for reasons of theme, then it also means that you can only play Decomposition on Formulas that are made up of at least one Formula as an ingredient, and never on Formulas that are made up of two basic elements (unless you retain the Formula card and return both elements to the Desk of Elements).
But perhaps the rules are happily unthematic on this point, and I'm wrong. So, what is the correct way to play this?

Well, I believe you can do it. Unthematic - yes, but possible.

I always played it so that you can simply return the ingredients to the table of elements. But reading the card again in this context I'd say you are right and can keep any of the cards as a completed formula.
The only restriction would be that if the decomposed formula is made from a normal card and a spell card then you cannot keep the spell card...

It took a while, but I've finally been able to get a response from the designer himself. The short answer is that the example above is a legal play, and you can use Decomposition to get formulas even if strictly speaking they weren't original ingredients of the formula you are decomposing. Here's the official word:
Quote: Hello! Thank you for playing my game! Yes, with Decomposition spell you can receive any formula as completed one from the formula that is being decomposed. There can be the main formula itself or any of its components. In your example you can receive Talisman of Secret Knowledge or Elixir of Fire or Emanating of power with Decomposition spell. So using this spell you can take a new formula as completed or to receive some new elements from a formula's components or both. Have a nice game and Happy New Year Sergei Machin Game designer

That's how I finally interpreted it, but the card is confusing as written. As it is, it's like a Transformation Spell, but with fewer choices to choose from.

Why would you do it though? Because when you play a Spell card, you get no points for it correct?
I get that the spell cards basically allow for you increase your selection of ingredients, I 'm just having a hard time grasping why you even bother to put a completed potion on your side if you get no points for it, and don't have any cards facedown on it. Unless I'm missing something

Jacob, you can uncover potions with the Decomposition spell that can be used to complete other potions. For example, let's say Potion A is made up of Elements B & C (and Potions B & C, respectively). However, Potion D needs Potion B to be complete. So you play your Decomposition Spell, turn up Potion B (putting cards A & C back in the middle), and then use Potion B to complete Potion D. So you can get points with it, if played correctly.

Ah I see yes, that does make sense. Thanks
