Battle Line gives much the same experience, but without the engine-building aspect. Seriously. It's a close enough game to be a sibling. It focuses simply on allocation, without the production, but it's got more 'take-that' than Magnate does. Direct attacks on your opponent's cards, ways to alter the victory condition for a certain column, etc.
I like Magnate better, for its engine-building, but Battle Line is a good game.
And cheap. Very good for its price.
