I've put together a good deck for newer players who want to hack and slash and get through questing phases pretty easily.

It may not be perfect and maybe there is some tweaking that can be done.

This deck uses a single core set. As usual comments, questions, and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

==============================================================

Heroes

Eowyn
Gimli
Legolas

Spirit cards

Northern Tracker (x2)
Lorien Guide (x3)
Hasty Stroke (x2)
The Galadhrim's Greeting (x2)
Unexepected Courage
The Favor of the Lady (x2)
A Test of Will (x2)

Tactics Cards

Horseback Archer (x2)
Veteran Axehand (x3)
Gondorian Spearman (x3)
Blade of Gondolin (x2)
Citadel Plate (x2)
Feint (x2)
Rain of Arrows (x2)
Horn of Gondor
Swift Strike

Neutral
Gandalf (x3)

Strategy:

Use Eowyn for questing, Legolas for attacking and getting extra quest tokens, Gimli to defend in early rounds and attack in later rounds. Use tactics allies to defend and spirit allies for questing in later rounds.

Attach Citadel Plate on Gimli ASAP
Attach Unexpected Courage on Gimli ASAP
Attach a Blade of Gondolin with Legolas ASAP
Attach The Favor of the Lady on Eowyn ASAP (attach the 2nd one if you get the chance later in the game)

Put a few Allies out to defend against enemies so you can kill them off with Gimli and Legoas togther. Gondorian Spearman is my first choice for this.

Use Northern Tracker and/or Lorien Guide to clear locations.

If you have Unexpected Courage on Gimli, use him to Quest or Defend (depending on the state of the staging and engagement areas), then ready him to attack.

Use Gandalf to lower threat and add Willpower to the Questing phase.

Sample first turn:
29 Starting Threat
Pay 1x resources to Heroes, Draw a card
Add any attachments if you have them (Horn of Gondor, Blade of Gondolin)
Commit all Heroes to the Quest
Reveal Encounter Card (resolve any effects)
Resolve quest, add quest tokens
Travel to Old Forest Road (Effect: Ready Legolas)
Encounter Forest Spider (+1 attack on first attack, 3 total)
Draw Combat Shadow card (resolve effects if necessary)
Attack is Undefended (put 3 damage on Gimli)
Attack with Legolas (3 attack vs 1 defense = 2 damage)
Refresh

Trying to hit that arrow!

Will try this one!

Edit: Tried it twice this morning. My card-drawing was dramatic. My first drawn card was Dol Goldur Orcs, which causes two out of three damages on Eowyn. Those orcs plus that #$%#% Hill troll and the third card being wargs caused the heroes a quick death.

Edit: As you can read, I am playing Journey down the Anduin right now. Finished Passage through Mirkwood. I am seriously stuck and there are 5 adventure packs waiting!

This is a good start. I think you need 50 though, for a legal size deck. It makes those important draws a little tougher to achieve.

50 card decks are for tournaments. I don't think that rule needs to apply for solo.games.

If you want to add more, I suggest Blade Mastery and Rain of Arrows from the Tactics deck.

I am geting the impression that there is nary a solo deck without Eowyn

It is a good thing my cards are sleeved, otherwise that card would be getting a bit worn out by now.

Thanks for this David. I have only ever used Tactics once (single sphere deck) which met its doom in Mirkwood. I will try this one tonight

If you are playing the Carrock solo, then Eowyn gets in the way - the 'easy' strategy for that is to dawdle through the questing of the first phase, doing all the threat control that you can. You build up as many allies as you can, so you can eventually finish the first phase and call down the trolls one by one. So for that scenario, threat control and card drawing is much more important than questing.

I make it a point to rarely use her, just out of principle I suppose

I keep meaning to embark on a quest without her. But everytime I do a combined count of all three heroes will...I get worried about questing and stick her back in

I have been using her at the moment on my initial runs through each adventure pack. I figure this is just for my education as I figure out how each adventure works. I plan then to remove her and build a deck around some different heroes. We have about 15 heroes(?) now so my challenge once I managed to beat each adventure with her is to do the same without and start getting to know the others.

All solo btw

Not so, my current deck uses Dain Ironfoot, Gloin and Bilbo. Lots of resources and lots of cards once it is up and running.

Thanks for the post. I'm a noob to LOTR:CG and this was my first attempt at playing with a multi-sphere, custom deck. I used your suggestion exactly and easily won against Mirkwood. I'll definitely be giving this deck some play time. Thanks again!

Who said, that he is in a non-dwarf deck?

Dwarven allies are also dwarf characters.

This thread is a revelation! Thanks to the OP, my teeth-gnashing failure at this game has been stemmed.

I was beginning to think the core set just didn't have the cards to succeed at basic questing, but now I can see there are plenty of options, even for solo play.

Thanks!

Also, as usual, I recommend checking out this thread for some nice core-only decks.

Officially, it is 50 cards for a legal deck. But if you aren't going to worry about playing by tournament rules, you can use as few cards as you want in your deck (as well as no limitations to the number of each card in your deck, like Gandalf)

Thanks a lot for this deck ! I finally did the mirkwood quest "easily" with a good score ( 85 btw... The best i did with mono-sphere core decks was 135 with the spirit one and losing everytime with the others ahah)

One question : isn't the 4 resource spirit ranger a little too big to play with only eowyn from the spirit sphere ? Even save 3 resources with her is long
