How smart do you have to be to play 18XX well? Are there books available that give you techniques from expert players? (you know like they have for chess or bridge)

Not particularly smart, but you have to be good at arithmetic or own a calculator.

this is good - 1830 Advanced Strategies and Common Mistakes by Henning Kanter - but you should have a good grasp on the rules first.

I don't think that it's that important. I think that like many other things, it's just something that you have to put time into. With that it becomes clearer and easier.

I think almost everyone needs practice to play it well. The rules aren't that complex, but some things you need to see happen in order to really understand them.

A new player can read through the rules, get a pretty solid grasp of how they work in a technical sense, and yet sit down to their first real game and have no idea what's truly happening. What you actually need to think about in a game isn't described by the rules, it's implied by them. This is annoying to people learning the system, but it's also a big part of what makes the system as great as it is.

That sounds like container. Which is what I liked about that game.

I can think of many games that are as complex as the 18xx; Brass, Tigris and Euphrat, Imperial, Dominant species.
Don't be afraid to try it, if you play it with experienced players, you will enjoy to live the way you will loose your game and it may even make the game difficult to live por those experienced players. 18XX is just a formidable experience.
