If I wanted a flicking game primarily for novelty and fun, how does this compare to Ascending Empires?

I greatly prefer Catacombs. The flicking is a much bigger part of Catacombs than it is in Ascendening Empires. Most of your time in Catacombs is spent either flicking, talking about strategy for which shot to try, or laughing/whining about the results of the previous shot. In contrast, most of the time in Ascending Empires is spent doing things like buying technology, making new ships, convincing other players to attack someone else, etc.
For me, personally, if I'm going to play a game with manual dexterity, it means I'm not in the mood for something heavier; so while the more traditional economic/negotiation elements of Ascending Empires may be well done, if I'm in the mood to enjoy those elements, I'd rather just play a game without the manual dexterity. Catacombs has strategy, but it all centers around the flicking, which just feels right to me.

I agree with Andrew. Ascending Empires feels much more like a Euro with some flicking elements added on. More important than flicking is your actual tech development and troop deployment. But overall, the flicking in AE feels secondary to your strategy. Most of the time, I didn't feel like precision was that critical with my shots. The same can't be said with Catacombs, however. Every shot can be critical in Catacombs, and some shots come down to millimeters. Additionally, rebounds and positional play are far more important.

Andrew is spot on. I would also add the game board/s on Catacombs are much better to play on. The puzzle piece board for Ascending Empires ends up creating edges that can disrupt gameplay.

I prefer Ascending Empires to Catacombs, but enjoy them both. I rate AE a 9 and Catacombs an 8, so you can't go wrong as far as I'm concerned.
