I've never heard of Paris Connection until now, so forgive my ignorance. How is a "railroad game" an abstract? I mean, obviously all games are an abstraction of what their theme, but it would seem that "abstract" games wouldn't have a theme...

Abstract strategy game in the sense of no chance and no (low? it's been a while) hidden information. Analogous to Through the Desert.
EDITED TO ADD: OK, it seems it has some hidden information. So it's indeed dubiously an abstract both by the "themeless" notion and by the "no chance, no hidden info" notion.

I was wondering that myself.. Here's the BGG definition of Abstract Strategy games:
"Abstract Strategy games are often (but not always): theme-less (without storyline) built on simple and/or straightforward design and mechanics perfect information games games that promote one player overtaking their opponent(s) little to no elements of luck, chance, or random occurrence"
Apart from the theme part, I suppose it fits the bill.

A hearty congrats to all. I loved 7 Wonders this year, but got to play Dominant Species for the first time yesterday, and I agree that it's pretty fantastic!

I think this is the first year where I've looked at the entire list of winners and went, "Hmm, yeah, alright, cool." A very agreeable list.
EDIT: Okay, well, I have no idea what Paris Connection is, but you can't win them all.

It would be great if we would all quit using the word "abstract" to mean so many different things. Best would be if the word were gone completely, and instead we used more descriptive words that at leaast people agree what they mean, e.g. no real-world theme, deterministic. Not sure how to make traction on that though.
