Right before the thanksgiving holiday, a group of our friends and family took the day off and we went out and hit up a few of the museums back home and picked up lunch. We headed back home and decided to knock out a few board games to pass the time and catch up on things.

To my dread someone suggested Apples to Apples. With about half and half dissension among the group we go forward playing Apples to Apples with a total of 6 people. So we dusted off the box "literally" and started playing.

The game started out with us relearning how everyone was going to react, we already picked out the people who knew nothing of history had Che Guevara completely wasted on them for "revolutionary", and there were 2 hands where everyone at the table had already mentioned "none of these choices make any sense", and they didn't even on an antonym level or joking level.

So after a few rounds I started getting frustrated and I broke out a connection on my phone to access a (rand) function where it would randomize 1 through 7. I figured if I am going to be frustrated by this event I might as well have some fun with it. I made the cards in my hand from left to right 1 through 7.

Long story short, when I am not judging the cards which I try to make an attempt on, I randomize the rest of my selections I offer as my "red" cards for the rest of the game and I win by 2 points coming back from a 3 point deficit. I don't feel as good as winning as much as proving this falls along the line of I just showed I replaced the mechanic with a 7 stop roulette wheel.

Apples to Apples is about people ... if you have to play things to win then winning can be a bonus .. but Apples to Apples is about enjoying the company of those at the table... the "mechanic" is that the judge can pick whichever card they want.. whether it makes sense to anyone else.. or even to themselves... it's about freeing your brain from right and wrong and just being with others.

The times I have enjoyed Apples to Apples with friends, each choice was followed by a short (30 seconds or less) explanation of WHY they made that choice. It helps with the judging and adds to the fun-factor as players struggle to explain that wierd choice to the group. Another "house-rule" is that each person is only allowed 1 use of the explanation "because I got tired of holding this card in my hand". This is a rule I have NEVER had to impliment because the players seem to enjoy giving wierd explanations.

BTW: I got this "house-rule" from Out-Of-The-Box when I demoed the game at GenCon the year Apples to Apples was introduced there. It was a FUN time.

Apples to apples isn't a bad game. It's one that gamers can endure while playing with non-gamers. Like you said, the box needed to be dusted off, so that means you only play once in a blue moon; suck it up and enjoy the gamethe one time a year you play it!

Whenever someone pressures me into playing this game, I insist that we run a low-tech version of your randomizer: each turn we add a random red card on behalf of "the game". "The Game" usually beats more than half of the human players.
