So I played a game of Kingsburg tonight with my finacee,
Chelsie Taresh

And Chelsie won with 97 points!

How, you may ask? Well pull up a seat dear reader and I will tell you...

First of all, we were playing with all the To Forge a Realm expansions except the soldier tokens: governors, all 7 building rows, alternate rows, and the destiny (event) cards. We were also using demosthenes65's variant of drawing three events per year. A few notes about events: we don't roll for New Quarry, Gold Mine, or Forest, we just take the good, because we find it more fun (we usually only play 2-player). Also, when we draw the blank event card we draw the next three event cards and choose the one we want together. In addition, we were playing with a homemade scenario which netted Chelsie 2 wood, 1 gold, a +2 token and a soldier over the course of the game.

All that said, Chelsie ended up victorious by playing the Pries, who gave her (and me) a white die every season. She built first the Architect's Guild row, followed by the entire Wizard's Guild row, the entire Cathedral row, and all the way to the Stone Wall on the Fortress row.

Chelsie was helped to victory by several great events. She won both the Military Parade and No Mercy; and we got all three free resource events, and Rising Stars (our favorite event!). She also scored some extra VP by turning in a wood for Royal Fleet. Finally, she ended up with more buildings than me, scoring an extra 3 points for the Architect's Guild, and had two resources left, scoring another point for her Cathedral. All told she had 47 points from buildings and 50 points from the board, events and her governor and building powers.

When it was all over Chelsie ended the game with the highest score ever (in a game we've played - though we have literally played hundreds). Now, granted we had a few things going that are not quite normal for Kingsburg, but WOW what a high score.

And that, my friends, is how it happened.

P.S. I ended the game with 83 points - not too shabby, but still a very distant second!

EDIT: Chelsie reminded me that with her last two goods giving her an extra point from the Cathedral, she actually scored 97 points!

I love this game and I will play it forever!

And it's younger than recent games.

So you were using both an unofficial variant and a couple house rules that that help maximize your productivity and minimize negative events and we're supposed to be surprised that you acheived high scores?

Remarkable scores, yes -- but it'd have been a lot more impressive if you'd been using the Rules As Written.

Yep, which is why I pointed out all the extras so no one would get the wrong idea. I have scored 85 before using only the base game and expansion with no modifications or variants though! Though when you play as often as we do, it's bound to happen eventually

Okay, 85 with the base game? Now I'm impressed! laugh
I think the best I've ever done was low 70s, and that was a fluke (most of the time it's around 55).

It was the base game plus all the "To Forge a Realm" expansions except soldier tokens, but yes. After playing several hundred times it's bound to happen eventually

72 in the absolute base game, no To Forge a Realm expansions, is my personal best. I played an opponent once that could have scored in the 80's had he played better (he rolled a natural, 3 dice 17, 9 out of the 15 rolls during the game). I was very excited to best him by 1 point (i think he lost a building to the winter twice).

Scoring extremely high requires the 17 spot, embassy, and an opponent that is of medium skill (or a combination there of). Too low skill and he may make poor choices but get the kings favor/envoy alot, and too much skill and he can keep it from you with skilled placement/building. I can regularly score in the low 60s, but average about 55-56 due to those games where things don't work out well.

Just scored 84 in a 3-player game with no house rules. We used the new building rows, governors, and events (no soldier tokens or alternate building rows). I played the Priest governor and built the Mint and the Cathedral (plus the Blacksmith, Stables, and Improvised Defenses) with 22 good leftover for an additional 11 points from the Cathedral!
