I'm wondering about the auto player mechanic, how does it feel?
Is Fresco fun with only 2 players?

I think it is strategic enough. Each player takes turns controlling Leonardo (the dummy player), so you can set yourself up, ruin things for your opponent. More importantly it keeps the game moving at a good pace.
Over all it is a good mechanic.

I find it great with 2p with very low randomness.

It plays great, except that I don't like that it adds an extra set of rules. There is something not-so intuitive about these extra rules as I have to relearn them every time we play 2p.

Well, an "extra set" of rules is a bit of a stretch.
They can be summed up with:
1. Alternate control of 3rd player named Leonardo. 2. Leonardo only ever does two actions - going to the Market and painting at the Cathedral. 3. When you control him, you decide his wake-up time, which market he will "buy" from (no paint is bought as he doesn't use it to complete Fresco tiles). Instead you just close down one market. 4. Leonardo automatically completes a Fresco tile that is one space away from the Bishop and then scores the points. The Bishop is moved to the completed space and...
THAT'S IT.
There are some very minor tweaks for the expansions as well. I think that if you played a 2 player game more than once in a blue moon, these rules would be 2nd nature.

Adding one more.
5) Leonardo does not participate in the last round when the player boards are turned over to the 2nd side.

Hang on there. Leo does still play in the last round, he just doesn't do the Cathedral action. He still has a Get up time, he closes a Market, and if you're playing with the 3 built in expansions, he still paints a Portrait, and does a Bishop's Request.
2 player rules, page 4 wrote: When the players flip their action sheets over Leonardo’s action sheet is not flipped, but his apprentice is removed from the cathedral column, he cannot perform this action anymore now.
