After my last move in China online, I felt shorted a bit on points. My stated road bonus is 11, but I think it should be 13, if my road chains were split up as shown here:

It appears that the northern road is scored for its maximum length, even though splitting into two shorter roads would garner more points. Is this standard China rules?

Hmm... playing face to face, we let the owner pick which route to take so this never comes up. To add to my ignorance, I've only played online once.

Sounds like the scoring algorithm needs to be more flexible: I would think you'd want maximum usage of houses rather than longest road. The exception, of course, would be a road containing a fortress.

Branches don't count so that top road only scores for it's longest uninterrupted length (with the minimum being 4 of course). Standard Wop/China rules. Nice chain by the way.

Branches don't count, you count the longest road

But is it a branch if it's part of another road?

Branches don't count, AND you count only ONE road - the longest, of course.

Your separate roads in this example are all part of the same road. you take the longest straight chain, anything off of that is a branch

Hmm...well, I lost by 3 points anyway, so the extra 2 wouldn't have made a difference.

You should count all roads that are at least 4 long. But when roads are touching like the main one in this case, it is a branch.

He told me that he clarified this issue in a previous thread, but I can't find it. May be somebody more competent than me with the BGG research tool will.

i answered this one before.
so, here is the correct rule interpretation by the designer:

In a network only the longest count.
(if there are more than one road in the network, still just the longest counts).

so, for the tactics: don't connect two sepreated roads (that would each count) to a network otherwise you'll loose points by that.

Yes, I always make sure to emphasize to new players that you could potentially decrease your total road score by adding houses that connect roads.
