As an FYI for those that follow these things, a couple of interesting occurences at the GameSquad site yesterday. As some of you are aware, the GameSquad forums (formerly StrategyZone Online, and formerly Warfare HQ) are a kind of general interest board and video gaming site with a number of dedicated subforums - but in reality seem to draw a lot of ASL fans and just a relative handful of posters to a few subformus for other video games, and not much else. The site owner, Don Maddox, posted a couple of times recently. He posted this on the 5th in the tech help forum:

Quote:
The forums are now running on the new server...

On a related note, I may move the ASL forums to a dedicated forum of their own. They are large enough to stand on their own.

and this in the ASL forum yesterday morning:

Quote:
The ASL content here may be moved onto an ASL-only forum at some point in the future.

It has been asked whether it is possible to submit donations to help support the site. At this time there is no plan to do that. It is possible that should this move occur a PayPal donation button for those inclined to make use of that will be placed somewhere on the forum. It has also been suggested that the site offer members the option to get a few premium services for a very small subscription fee. That remains only a possibility at this point and there are no plans to charge anyone for access.

The purpose of this thread is not to solicit feedback from the community, it's just more of a heads-up that there may be a change to the forums at some unspecified point in the future.

Which seems benign enough. What you won't get out of that is the six pages of conversation that happened in the hour or so after he posted yesterday morning.

Including two very long posts by Don himself, in which he admitted that the forums have been running at a financial loss (out of pocket) for some time, and that a move to a new server would probably cause the loss of the advertisers he has (who would have no interest in advertising on an ASL site) - with costs of about $260 a month and a wife fed up with the constant money sink. He actually posted at length about his original vision of the site, noting that, like BGG/VGG, he intended it to be a place where gamers could come together but, in his words, "Numerous people worked tirelessly to undermine" the effort.

There were certainly offers of financial help from several posters there, advice on how to get ASL advertising, etc., as well as the sage observation that people have offered help in similar situations to other webmasters, only to disappear when the time came.

Someone whistle pointed out that BGG/VGG have been using custom made software, a really great suite of interactive features, and a policy of strong moderation to provide a positive online experience for their own users. It was also pointed out that numerous people attempted to help Don create a positive "all-inclusive" atmosphere there, by writing general interest articles for the "front page", blog articles, etc. and that it was ungrateful or inaccurate to assess GS's failure to acquire a mass audience as mass sabotage on the part of the clientelle. Particularly when there were elements of the site that seemed not well thought out - like the setting up of "club" areas in an attempt to splinter the audience into smaller out of the way areas of the forum.

At that point, Don deleted about 100 comments in response to his - unusual, for GS, since I've rarely, if ever, seen any posts deleted there, and then posted this:

Quote:
Although some you may have helpful suggestions you wish to contribute, I suggest you send those via email or PM as protracted debate over matters like site donations and subscriptions will be of little benefit to anyone.

This is just a heads-up of a possible change.

These rumours are nothing new, and it's talk that has been going on for months now. Unusual in that the site owner is the one spreading rumours about his own site though...

When a site closes another one appears, as there is a strong demand for a good ASL forum. What would be a pity is to lose all the information stored there.

Everyone should just move here.

Problem solved.

I live in the city of Gulf, on the shores of Lake Water. This fun fact has nothing to do with this badge you're pointing at.

*shrug* gulp

The GS people need a forum where the threads can be derailed and where the discussion can get heated and personal. Which means BGG wouldn't cut it.

(on a less scathing note, the GS forums also has nice subforums for VASL, AARs, Opponent's wanted etc etc, which BGG lacks).

Please no. I like the high signal to noise ratio that BGG has in these ASL forums, and do not want it dropping because of GS people bringing their idiosyncracies here.

I wonder if you couldn't add "VASL" into the videogamegeek section of the site somehow, in order to get a set of dedicated forums there, then link to the ASL forums. I might give it a try.

There's no need to go to VGG... there are little used options here on BGG that would work.

First, there's already a VASL guild available here:

ASL/ASLSK VASL Meetup
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/321

It may not seem to be very active, but it does work. I've used it to get PBEM matches with three other players so far. The biggest problem with the VASL guild is that it can't be made a part of the ASL family, so to receive a notice when someone posts a game request in the guild you have to (a) know that the guild actually exists, and (b) subscribe to the guild itself.

But it is also possible to have custom folders added to a BGG page. For example, look at the Magic Realm forums:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/forums/thing/22/magic-realm

In addition to the standard folders found on every BGG game page, there's also a "Realmspeak" folder. This folder is dedicated to the Java version of Magic Realm, which is called RealmSpeak. We asked for a folder in which we could discuss the technical issues of the Java program, and the BGG admins agreed.

So, in theory, a VASL folder and/or an Opponents Wanted folder could be added to the forums on the main ASL page. But you would have to ask one of the admins about their current policy on custom folders (the Realmspeak folder was added quite a while ago).

Has that word crossed the Atlantic? Just checked it out on the free online dictionary and it mentions that the singular is used in the UK to describe having sex (to knob someone) but no mention of the other use of it.

Having to capture Spangler's knob on Sid Meier's 'Gettysburg' as an objective never failed to raise a smile on my eight year old's face (as he was then).

On the Urbandictionary.com, the definitions are :
- 1) The penis 2) An obnoxious person
- A complete moron
- 1. Slightly less harsh term for the male anatomy than pecker or dick.
2. Also can be used as a term similar to goof, tool or moron.

That seems to indicate that the term is an outright insult and not very friendly about CSW.
Another sign that the BGG forum is not a congenial place?

BTW, I don't think that GS is going down so easily.

Crossed the Atlantic ! Im a geordie plus in Canada its used sparingly already .

re disparaging to CSW it isnt, its meant to be disparaging to GS . I cant see many of the usual suspects coming to BGG
