I heard it was invented by a bunch of Quakers as a teaching tool to illustrate the suckiness of monopolies. Which, some people might interpret as "anti-capitalist", I guess. Probably the same people that view minimum wage laws and non-toll roads as socialist.

But, the article could be right. I heard my version from some guy at a homeless shelter years ago. Now that I come to think of it, my memory of that conversation is kind of sketchy. Maybe he did say "anti-capitalist" or a "critique of capitalism"?

Either way, the original intent was not "get it all and smash your opponent". That I'm pretty sure of. The guy who made Anti-Monopoly was involved in a law suit with Parker Bros back in the early 80s and spent a lot of time researching the pre-PB Monopoly. He won his case against PB, btw.
