Character Generation
Character Generation
I'll post some guidelines and other general information soon. But let's get started on character generation first!
I will let you know who your parents are. This will happen after you assign your points and come up with a background. But before you can do any of that, you need to choose your heritage.
The choices are Amber and Chaos, the two poles of the multiverse.
Amber heritage gives you access to the Pattern and means that you are directly related to the primary characters from the first series of books. Amberites come from a place that is known for never changing.
Chaos heritage gives you access to Shapeshifting and to the Logrus. Logrus allows you to do most of the same things that Pattern does but in a different way. Chaosians come from a dynamic place with some areas that can change while you watch them. Hence the shapeshifting.
I know my descriptions above are really sketchy. Now is the time to ask questions and get clarifications.
Even if your character isn't aware of his or her heritage, you'll need to choose one since it will determine what powers you can get as well as which parents I choose for you.

Hmmm... I was a Chaosian in a previous Brian-game. I'm thinking I might play Amber this time. Then again, Matt Stephens is far too dangerous to be left unsupervised... Roleplaying is not a competitive sport, and yet I feel everybody has already lost!!!
Does this make Amber the Global Thermonuclear War of roleplaying, that the only winning move is not to play??? NO I SAY!!! We MUST carry on!!!
I'll be an Amberite. But possibly an evil one.
Unless Brian carries out his threat to make me and Matt S siblings.

Hm..... how about Ambos? (which does mean 'Both' in spanish!)
Actually, I'll have to go Amber. I figure that's the safe bet for a first-timer.
Edit: Oh, and go Tennesseans! At least three or four of us here? I expect to see someone playing Davey Crockett or Elvis! (Now there's an idea!)

Waitaminnit...Nate has a point. Is one a safer bet over the other for an Amber virgin?

Not as such. There's more information about Amber out there since that's where most of the stuff in the books happens but the upside to playing a Chaosian, is that you can be much freer to make things up since there's less canon to run up against.
I'll make sure you've got what you need to be from Chaos.

OK, question. Is Amber/Chaos basically good/evil? I guess culture-wise what's the difference? Good/evil, upper class/lower class? Or is it nothing like that at all?

Good and evil are completely in the eye of the beholder in this setting. During the first five books, Chaos is depicted as the Bad Guys because the whole thing is told from the POV of an Amberite. Then we get to the second set of novels and we meet a lot of Chaosians which reveals that they are every bit as diverse as anyone else.
Amber/Chaos more closely maps to Stasis/Dynamism but even that is too simplistic.
The Pattern and the Logrus do similar things but in very different ways (more info on that soon, I promise). For now, it's useful to know that Shapeshifting is required to be a Logrus initiate. Therefore, the people who rule Chaos (the nobility, if you will) are all shapeshifters. The ability to change form at will does something to your outlook.
So, really, Amber/Chaos is no different from America/Russia (or, these days maybe America/China) in a lot of ways. They're the undisputed superpowers of the multiverse but the individual members of each realm pursue their own agendas and live their own lives.
When I say "multiverse" I mean it. Initiates of the Pattern and Logrus may travel to any world (shadow, in the in-game parlance) they can imagine. Shadow Earth is mentioned frequently in the books and it is comprised of everything we think of as The Universe. They are referred to as Shadows because every world/universe that exists is a mere shadow of Amber which sits at the center of all things.
