Welcome to the Relative Pressure In-Character thread!

"I am the soul of honor, kindness, mercy, and goodness. Trust me in all things."

Most in-character posts will go here. There are other threads to represent specific locations in the multiverse.

For example:
Location: Castle Amber
Location: Chaos

Other threads:

Relative Pressure Character Generation and OOC
Campaign Wiki

Posting conventions:

Post character speech in bold.

Short out-of-character questions or statements should be posted in gray.

Longer out-of-character stuff should be posted in the OOC thread.

Quote this post to see the code for formatting.

Since we have so many players, I will endeavor to highlight your characters' names in bold so they stand out.

Try to check in on the game at least once a day.

If you are going to be offline for an extended period of time, let us know.

Do not post here until I have posted your introductory scene. I will begin each post with your character's name.

Thanks for playing!!

You have been hiking for hours. Sunlight illuminates the deep blue leaves of the jungle canopy to create an azure wonderland down where you are in the underbrush.

A cluster of crushed plants brings something to the front of your mind that has been subconsciously nagging at you for a while, now. You have seen no traces of any animals heavy enough to have broken these stems. Besides yourself, that is.

What are you doing now?

You've been hearing news of a disease that's sweeping across the horn of Africa. It started out small, as these things do, but has all the markings of an emergent pandemic.

A multinational task force has assembled in Addis Ababa. The finest minds of the Shadow are going up against this and they are struggling.

What are you doing now?

I would like to make contact with the task force and offer my services as a microbiologist, as I assume this will be the most likely scenario to allow me to be taken seriously. This will hopefully give me access to the disease so that I might study and and work on any possible cures.

When you arrive in Ethiopia, your reputation has preceded you. Your credentials get you to the head of the task force in short order. She assigns you to the team that is directly observing the microbes.

They're right. This is bad.

It is a heavily mutated strain of a virus that was eradicated decades ago. Further examination reveals direct manipulation of the virus. This could not have happened naturally. Someone created this thing intentionally.

I seclude myself in the lab assigned to me and begin furiously studying the creatures, examining them for any indicators, signs that would point to what country (or countries) they originated from. If I succeed at that I will then start working on figuring out who specifically was working on them.

I send my lab assistant T.C. to get all the info he can on the big bio-designers from around the world.

Melissa Gay wrote:
Skarri begins the game in the middle of a high-speed chase through the heart of downtown Mittgard City, skimming through traffic atop a concave golden disc, clad in her prototype battle-armor. The Osprey is in flight, and her quarry are criminals fugitives out of Muspellheim.

They shoot fireballs at her as she dodges and weaves, trying to get into position for a takedown, or at least to drive them out of this populated area.

"Osprey to Eagle's Nest, I need backup out here! Where's my partner?"

"Osprey, this is Eagle's Nest. Your signal's weak. We're--ar--sk------ort."

Then your comm goes dead.

And the fireballs are still flying. You've fought these guys before but there's something different about them this time. Their tactics are the same but their firepower has increased dramatically.

You finally get them out over the bay where you can cut loose. You knock one into the water and the Folkvarder boats scurry to intercept him.

The second one singes you with a blast of jötunn-fire but falls to your fists. Splash! Another one for the bay.

"--sprey, report! We've lost your location!"

Apparently that one had a signal jammer.

The remaining two criminals disappear in a blast of frosty air which is a Niflheim trick. Those guys never work together.

You catch a glimpse of the destination of the departing criminals. They were clearly going to another world but it's not one of the nine you know.

What are you doing now?

"Osprey reporting-- I'm going in!"

I attempt to dive into the closing world-rift after the criminals.

Hmm. This seems wrong. But whatever was here was clearly not being careful, and that works in my favour if I'm to find out what it was. Let's see where these tracks lead...

You make it through the rift just as it closes.

And everything is dark.

Really dark.

You are still on your shield and you can feel air moving across your face so you're definitely moving.

Eventually dim lights appear in the distance. As you get closer, you can pick out what appears to be a city. A really big one.

Now your comm unit is picking up faint transmissions. The automated scanning algorithm moves from channel to channel. Most of the languages aren't anything you recognize but one stands out as familiar, if jarring.

It is the language of Svartalfheim but you are definitely not in Svartalfheim.

After an hour of tracking, it becomes clear to you that whatever stepped on the plants is the size and shape of a large human. The bright red fibers snagged on a low limb give a clue about what the person was wearing.

Oh, look. A trap.

There is a cleverly disguised pit right where you would have stepped if you had been just following the tracks and not paying attention to the rest of your surroundings.

T.C. returns with a list of three companies that could possibly have done this. You exclude one of them immediately because you have first-hand knowledge of what they're really working on and it's not this.

The other two are based in Egypt but they have significant presences all over Africa. Yemen, in particular. The Yemen angle matches some of the indicators you've found in the virus research.

I immediately get to work on this in an attempt to find the vaccine. I know this will be a slow-going process, but any lives I'm able to save will be better than the none who will be saved if I don't solve the problem.

I advise T.C. and my fellow scientists to keep this hush-hush as we don't want to start some kind of escalated conflict. Once we have the problem itself solved we can worry about the diplomatic ramifications.

I subvocalize the order to the battle-armor, "Selkskunn, end all transmissions, go into commdark mode. Begin record mode, log all actions for Eagle's Nest, do not send until we are back in secured territory. Continue receiving, lock in on apparent Svartalven signal, begin trace mode."

I follow that signal to its source.

This is not good. If some rogue Forgemaster is mixed up in this criminal enterprise, there's a good chance he has the tech to detect my suit, or my shield. As soon as I'm over land, or whatever passes for land here, I undeploy the Arnkell someplace I can get a good look at the city and the populace, so I can better blend in while I recon.

You have returned to Amber with just enough time to change into your court clothes and report to King Random.

He meets you in one of the sitting rooms just down the hall from the Throne Room. Drinks are offered and, once the servants depart, it's just you and the king.

He consults an amethyst ring on his right hand for a few moments before he speaks.

"So," he says with a mixture of familiarity and command. "How did things go in Lyonesse? Did that Kashfan delegation even show up?"

The city is on the coast of a black ocean. The sky is similarly ebony and starless. The only lights are coming from the city which is even bigger than it looked before.

The Svartalf signal is coming from a section on one of the edges of the city. You find a place to hide and you begin creeping slowly towards it. You see enough human-looking people here that your appearance won't be a problem but the Ansuz rune on your suit might draw some unwelcome attention.

The Svartalf compound is what you'd expect. An industrial nightmare with tight security.

On your way to the compound, you got a look at some other parts of the city and you get the sense that this entire metropolis exists for a single purpose. What that purpose is remains unclear, just yet.

OOC: What name are you going by in this Shadow?

Days pass. Time goes by in a blur as you work tirelessly to find a cure. Reports come in from other countries (notably Eritrea where the outbreak started) that people are dying by the hundreds each day.

T.C., on your orders, set up local refugee camps for those fleeing other countries. You've managed to carve out a bit of time to visit the camps a few times. Talking to the survivors and to the patients in the quarantine tents drives home just how bad this is.

Your quarters on base start to fill up with gifts from grateful refugees.

OOC -- I think I'm going by William Godson.

I go through the gifts, keeping only what might directly benefit my research or prove useful. The rest I redistribute to those present.

I keep pushing away at a vaccine, knowing that I'm growing closer daily, just missing...SOMEthing...

You wrap up your business in Niigata quickly and then you make your way to a small village.

The drive out of the city was unusual. You got the distinct feeling that you were being watched.

Despite that, you arrive in the village without incident. The friend you arranged to meet is already waiting for you at the restaurant and you sit at the table just as the sake arrives.

The feeling that you are being observed has not left you.

What are you doing now?

Subvocalizing into the flight recorder in my suit, "Running through my list of options. I'm in pursuit of known felons, out of my jurisdiction, on potentially hostile ground in an unknown World. No backup. No way home. Only one way forward-- search for evidence of criminal conspiracy, then bust that compound."

I proceed to attempt exactly that.
