My wife and our friends love this game, I think they like the fact that it's an RPG without having to play an RPG... Are there any other games out there like this? I tried Fortune and Glory and it didn't go over well, I think more story and less action is better. Terrible afflictions are a plus as well.

Arkham Horror with Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror Expansion (the expansion has injury and madness cards that act as afflicitions) might do the trick.

How about Knights of Camelot? - I have not played it, so this is a question, not an answer.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective immerses the players in the world of Sherlock Holmes, using keyed sentences to provide clues toward solving a crime each game.
The excellent and free Doctor Who: Solitaire Story Game is a step beyond TotAN, especially enjoyable if you're a fan of any of the Doctor Who series. It's a little more complicated but allows for each game to continue your adventures in time and space.
Another thread here discusses other quasi-roleplaying boardgames and the transition from TotAN to simple RPGs.

Barbarian Prince is available as a free download, but unfortunately it is solitaire.
Gumshoe is the less popular version of sherlock holmes consulting detective by the same company. I like it a lot.

Once Upon a Time is a brilliant card-based game of fairy tale storytelling that plays out pretty quickly (and I know the designers were big fans of the original Tales of the Arabian Nights). I've long thought that an Arabian Nights was an obvious setting for a sequel.
There's more game and less story in Betrayal at House on the Hill than in "Tales", but it's definitely got a strong story flavor.

I'd have a look at Quest: A Time of Heroes. Its got the same 'Choose Your Own Adventure' mechanic as Arabian Nights and is very much an RPG/Board Game hybrid. Doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was great!

The downside of it being that the adventures are very limited and don't offer much replayability. In the end there would have to be a GM creating new adventures anyhow, which is what Totan doesn't need.

New game in the works that expands upon mechanics of Arabian Nights: Agents of SMERSH. It is listed here on BGG. Should be out next year.
