Reiner Knizia's design for the latest Queen edition added sixteen cards. This included six each of monks and books, requiring a meld of three monks to get a church, or three books to get a library. (Two churches and libraries are included.)

However Queen chose, without consultation, to include only five each of monks and books, and require melds of just two each.

This is not an improvement, and produces the result that the fifth card of each is useless, as well as possibly imbalancing things otherwise.

Switching to a personal opinion, but one I haven't tried, it might make more sense to require three and two for the first and second melds of each type, or to make the fifth card count as a pair for end of game scoring (I think I'll try the first of these if I play).

Thanks for the heads up, Chris. Was (still am?) looking forwards to seeing the changes to this gem.

Chris, here's another possible way of dealing with the lack of a sixth Monk and Book card. Require 3 Monks or 3 Books for a display. After the first Monk meld, take one of the cards and shuffle it back into the deck. Similarly, after the first Book meld, shuffle one of those cards back into the deck. It's not perfect, but it might get you close to Reiner's version.

Believe it or not, I thought of that, but thought it a bit too fiddly. But as you say it gets closer.

Just buy a second copy (and send me one of each).

I didn't buy my first copy. At least not of this edition, I don't recall if I bought or was given my copy of the previous edition.

(Six people could get together and have five new versions as designed and one previous edition and two each spare churches and libraries. Seems rather like hard work though.)
