Turn 4:

Turn Marker advanced. With only 1 German Command Token on board no Sniper Activity possible. One German Command Token moved to the Available Box and two Russian Commands move over to their Available Box.
Reseed - This will be interesting.

Germans pay 5 (Assault) for a Fire Order to get things started this turn. The two Stug squads still capable of firing activate for 1 (Tactical) each while a fresh Mission Command Token is placed with the Pioneers in the Melee hex. Pioneer Platoon and MG34 Squad activate for 0. First Stug misses the T34 as does the return fire (+2), making the T34 spent in the process. Immobilized Stug fires into the now spent T34, gaining an Unconfirmed Kill. Pioneers fire at suppressed Rifle squad on a 1d20, eliminating it and gaining sole control of another Victory Hex. MG 34 squad narrowly misses Russian Rifle platoon. The same cannot be said for the Russian Rifle platoon. Spending 2 initiative to return fire, the Broken MG unit in the hex is eliminated while the remaining MG squad gets pinned, even with a -1D for long range.

End of Order
Pawn on Russian 0

Russians pay 1 for Asset - Mortar Battery - targeted on H7, the Victory Hex the Germans just gained control of on their last Order. Russians give up the Fate Card to add +12, however, with a 19 rolled gaining a direct hit without modifiers, it was wasted. With all the explosions going on, the Grenadiers with the Unconfirmed Kill Marker on the only casualties. Not the amount of damage the Russians hoped for.

End of Order
Pawn on German 1

Germans pay 9 for Regiment Support - 2 Assets - Medium Battery and Fighter Bomber. Excellent draw for the Germans.

End of Order
Pawn on Russian 8

Russians pay 6 to Advance - Mission Command Token placed on map - All Rifle and Maxim MG units in area activate to advance in hopes of taking back that fourth Victory hex.

End of Order
Pawn on Russian 2

Russians pay 6 to Advance again.

End of Order
Pawn on German 4

Germans pay 1 for Asset - Fighter Bomber - on Rifle unit in a Victory Hex (house) in the Center of the map. A 13 is rolled = 1 hex North of the Spotting Round, giving the Germans a choice of between the original target of the Rifle Platoon or the T34 with Unconfirmed Kill marker. A 15 is needed to hit the Rifle Platoon (11 + 4 for cover) while a 27 is needed to hit the T34. Rifle Platoon gets hit (22 rolled) and is shaken. Having Air Superiority already, another Fighter Bomber takes aim at the Rifle Platoon, but the order get fouled up a bit (8 rolled = in hex NE of T34) , just missing the T34 with a 26 roll.

End of Order
Pawn on German 3

Germans pay 1 for Asset - Medium Battery - giving up Fate Card for the additional +12. Shaken Rifle Platoon is targeted again. This time the Fate Card delivers, a 6 is rolled, which with just another +6 would hit nothing but forest. Rifle Platoon is the only unit in the blast radius, but hit the dirt in time for no damage.

End of Order
Pawn on German 2

Germans pay 7 - Flip Sniper to German - and order up a Fire Command. Pioneer Platoon, MG 34 squad (still under Mission Command) and two Stugs (Tactical) activate. Both Stugs miss. T34 unable to return fire. MG 34 misses as does Russian return fire, becoming spent. Pioneers, as usual, hit, hitting the Maxim and suppressing it. Rifle Platoon returns fire (+1D) gaining a hit on the Pioneers, who are now pinned.

End of Order
Pawn on Russian 7

Russians pay 8 to Fire - 2 Rifle Platoons and Maxim MG Squad activate under Mission Command. First Rifle Squad shoot at pinned MG34 squad from long range (-1D) hitting and eliminating them. No return fire possible. Maxim MG takes aim at Pinned Pioneers, rolling a 10 and a 9. Hit! Pioneer Platoon eliminated. Resulting Pioneer Squad (Fresh) returns fire, hitting the suppressed Maxim and eliminating it. Pioneers also become spent doing so.
Last Rifle Platoon fires (+1D) hitting and destroying the Pinned Pioneers Squad.

End of Order
Pawn on German 1

Germans have to pay 9, and not wanting to do anything that would result in a possible loss to the last Pioneer squad in the 4th Victory Hex needed to win, elect to Rally. The two Stugs with Red numbers both fail and are eliminated while the Broken Grenadier Squad also fails, but stays Broken

End of Order
End of Turn
Pawn on Russian 8

End of Turn Procedure with Sudden Death, a 14 is rolled. Game over, but the Russians want another chance at that 4th Victory Hex, so give the Fate Card for a Reroll. A 15 is rolled and the Germans are content with their very narrow victory.

Questions:
1) Can an opposing unit outside a Melee return fire if their last friendly unit is eliminated in a Melee hex, as in the first order of this turn?

2) Can a Fresh Squad resulting from its Platoon being eliminated, return fire? As the Pioneer Squad in the 2nd to last order?
**Found the answer to this already, yes they can**

Conclusion: An excellent Learning Scenario. A lot of fun with a lot of choices to be made. Perhaps next time, keep the T34's closer to their main force as well as bring over the 3rd T34. I want to replay this now to see what effect that would have, but I also want to play on the Big-Boy map in Scenario 1;-) I'll decide this weekend.

I hope any newbees (such as myself) found this 4 part AAR helpful, and that any of you Old Grognards will evaluate and critique them with open and blatant honesty. Any mistakes I made as far as rules employment I would appreciate knowing earlier rather than later so I don't get into a bad habit.
Well done, Chad. An Excellent game and gaming experience was had here. Looking forward to playing the next 10 Scenarios and the next in the Fighting Formations Series, which will be..........whistle

Best Regards,
Tankboy

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

Yes. The return firer need not be the same unit as the one shot at.
