I just came across that the weight for this game is only 2.8. Any idea why it would be considered so light? While it's easy to teach, I think the strategy and player interaction makes this game a major brain burn. Trying to figure out what a stock is worth, what actions to choose, where to build track, whether to win an auction or encourage someone else to win it, whether to null action, all of it.

At this point, the only games that I get a similar level of brain burn are games that have a significantly higher game weight (e.g.Through the Ages, Agricola, Vinhos, Pret-a-Porter, Reef Encounter, 2019: The Arctic, Brass, and possibly Vanuatu).

Any thoughts?

I agree, and the problem is...

* pulls out tiny, well-worn soap box *

Game Play Weight has too many definitions. As-is, it doesn't distinguish between a simple-to-learn-but-deep-to-play game like Go and a complex-to-learn-and-play game like Android. Both show a weight of 4.

Chicago Express has tons of replay value and takes a while to learn to play well because each small decision leads to complex interactions, but on the surface it looks like a more simple, "light" game.

Ideally we'd have different categories to separate learning weight from strategic weight, but until the new site design comes out I'm not expecting any change.

Easy to learn, hard to master. I think it's a pretty reasonable weight for the game. But do remember that everyone has their own concept of what game weight rating should be based on.

If you play this with noobs/non gamers it's easy to see this being rated as a 2 or there abouts, but each decision can have huge knock on consequences which aren't necessarily obvious in the heat of the moment. Null auctions are perhaps the hardest element to understand, so is blocking and wanting a certain player as your ally in a company so that he will help you... they're some very difficult concepts and require you to block others from making the moves they need and then bid diplomatically in the auction phase.

I tend to find there is much less blocking and null auctions with noobs, hence you are more likely to reach Chicago but will probably have fewer rounds and end the game with less money.
