Hate to burst the bubble, but with GW's announcement today of the RE-release of their Lord of the Rings mini game.....it will most likely be the box set. Sad to say.

They fought to keep the license for the line and they are promising some new sculpts, terrain and such...so they are going big to push. I would say they will most likely put it in a box set like the other 2 main line games WH and 40K.

I WISH it were a cool BB box. I would say that a cool pitch and some good plastic minis would be great. Like many others I would love to see more than the 2 base teams or maybe even a couple star players sculpts in the box.

Well well. My feelings are mixed. It stands to reason that a revamped LOTR would be the 2012 box set. Good timing from a Peter Jackson tie-in perspective. Meanwhile my wallet can heal a bit while I patiently wait for a 4 team, 64 minis, new pitch, star player packed, Blood Bowl limited edition. The 30th anniversary is only 5 years away!

As to the financial feasibility of a Blood Bowl re-release:

BB probably makes GW as much revenue in "invisible GW Product Sales" as it does in official BB Products (if not much more). I know I, and lots of other players, use GW Plastic Fantasy/40k sets to customize teams from - this is generating some revenue for GW that, I would wager, is at least on par with the sale of official BB products.

And everyone is right that GW (probably) has a ton of teams and individual minis that don't sell particularly rapidly in stock, and as such have little incentive to make all new sculpts and castings for the 25+ teams.

So, what better way to try and move all that product than to release a new BB set with great components to try and get new BB players (some loyal GW Fantasy/40k Players; others just your standard non-GW boardgamers) into the game and bring some attention to their specialist games BB stock? Do it as a one-off release, try to get some new GW customers, and also try and boost a little interest in their presumably huge stock of current BB products. Ideally, the new sculpted teams in a re-released set could be something like Slann and Chaos Pact, thus giving miniatures and "official GW approval" to those teams, though it's more likely GW would pick teams with more flagship recognition.

I know others are disagreeing, but I could see lots of Blood Bowl veterans also buying this sort of set, for a variety of reasons (but as has been noted, BB vets wouldn't even be GW's target audience).

The only big problem, then, is what's to be done about the remaining stock of the current "thin box" variant of the 3rd Edition still available for purchase? Well, they could either do a limited release run of the BB "Collector Anniversary Set" and then hope whatever new interest in the game it generates might translate into new players buying the remaining 3rd Ed stock at some point. Alternatively, they could pull the sets apart and basically sell everything except the outdated book. Players are always looking for more pitches (with pass rules, templates, and tokens) so that they can host bigger events. Players also always want more Block Dice sets (and are usually willing to pay $8-10 USD for just a set alone). The two team sprues could be combined and sold as a "Team Expansion Set," assuming the new boxed set didn't have Humans and Orcs in it as the focus. In fairness, repackaging these sets into parts and reselling them may not be more economical than GW just sitting on the remaining stocks for a long, long time, but it's one conceivable option.

GW's bigger concern, probably, is how to move all those metal teams, blisters, and star players. Best way to do that is to drum up some new interest in table-top leagues, and best way to do that is a nice one-off collector's anniversary set of BB (whether limited edition or replacement base set).

So, do we know anything more about this? Has GW announced what will be this years stand alone release? I really hope it would be a new BB box.

They have not (though it isn't clear whether there will be one every year, it isn't a policy or anything)

However, Cyanide studios who make the BB video game have just announced that they're also doing a Dungeonbowl video game this summer. It would lend a lot of credence to the idea that the stand alone release would be either a rerelease of Blood Bowl or possibly even Dungeonbowl.

They announced Dreadfleet in September for an October release so I wouldn't hold your breath on this one.

I didn't figure they'd announce the boxed set this summer, but I think we're seeing some things that are prepping for it in the fall.
