Just wanted to reconfirm if my understanding is correct:
- When I start the game I wouldn't have any building on the map and hence can use a industry card to build on any location on the map or a location card to build there - No need of connections when using a location card at any point in the game - When you have to use an industry card it has to be connected with your own canal/rail to the location where you intend to build or in case that can't be done you can build it on any location provided it is your 1st industry - Once you have an industry of your color on the board the only way we can continue building is having the connections and using the industry card or using the location card. - In case you are building industries requiring coal/iron you have to be connected to a mine through links (yours or others) or connected to a "built" port flipped or unflipped so that you can use the external market - Also when you discard 2 cards to build, it can be used as an industry card following normal rules. It does not mean you can build an industry in a location where you are not connected through your links nor have a presence (as in the rail phase to build the 2nd industry in a location)
Please correct if any of the above statements are wrong.
Thanks and Regards, Madhu

Looks like you have everything right except this:

This is true for coal. Iron, on the other hand, can "fly". If there is Iron anywhere on the map (and you are building an industry tile that requires Iron), then you must take it from one of those Iron Works. If there's a choice, you can take any Iron cube from the map. If there is no Iron on the map, then you can buy it from the demand track, regardless of whether there is a Port connected to where you are building.
If you require Coal for the building, then you must bring it along a link. If there is Coal on the board that you can take, then you must take the "closest" (fewest links) Coal. If there is no Coal on the board, or none that is connected to where you're building, then you must buy Coal from the demand track, provided there is a connection from where you are building to a Port - it can be a built port (flipped or unflipped), or one that is printed on the board.
Trust me - the first time you play, you will probably have many times where you try to play a building on the board and someone says "nope", or "you can't build that there". There are so many different reasons that a placement is illegal, and through the first couple times I've played, I have accidentally tried to violate pretty much all of them. Try not to get frustrated by that. After a while, it starts to sink in.

Playing two cards is like a wild location card, not like a wild industry card. You do not need to be linked to the location. Usual rules apply so, for instance, you might need to be linked to a coal mine or port if the tile you are building requires coal.
